About The Position

This position is for current HSE Student Teachers ONLY who wish to Substitute Teach. It is a part-time role, contingent on University Guidelines. The primary goal is to ensure each student has a positive day while maintaining and protecting student safety at all times. Substitutes are expected to report to their assigned school building 30 minutes before students arrive, review plans and schedules, and follow established routines and procedures. Responsibilities include taking attendance, teaching outlined lessons, overseeing student behavior, ensuring student safety, and leaving detailed notes about the day. Adherence to all school policies, rules, and procedures is mandatory. Personal electronic devices like earbuds and cell phones are not permitted in the classroom when students are present. Communication regarding lateness or absence is required before 6 AM when possible.

Requirements

• Current HSE Student Teachers ONLY
• 30+ College credits or the international equivalent (ParaPathways Exam can be taken in lieu of)
• Indiana Sub permit or valid Indiana teaching license.
• Must be able to read and follow teacher prepared lesson plans.
• Must be able to write detailed notes about the day.
• Must be able to speak and understand English when leading a class.
• Kind, flexible and able to maintain classroom control.
• Receptive to coaching and feedback from other staff and building administrators.
• Able to build rapport with students and staff.
• Must speak and act in a respectful, acceptable and safe manner.
• Detail oriented in following directions and maintaining student safety.
• Is patient and kind in all student/adult interactions.
• Your current approved HSE Background employment/student teacher check is valid for this position.
• Must cancel prior to 6 AM when possible; let district sub coordinator and/or building know if going to be late or unable to report to work.

Responsibilities

• Report to the building sub coordinator upon arrival at the school building.
• Review with the building sub coordinator all plans and schedules to be followed during the teaching day.
• Maintain as fully as possible the established routines and procedures of the school and classroom to which assigned.
• Accurately take and report attendance as directed, via paper or Skyward.
• Teach the lesson outlined and described in the lesson plan prepared by the absent teacher or provided by building staff.
• Follow the sub plans!
• Consult as appropriate, with the building sub coordinator, before initiating any teacher or other procedures not specified in the lesson plan and substitute teacher information prepared by the absent teacher.
• Assume responsibility for overseeing student behavior in class and during lunch and recess periods.
• Know where every student is at all times.
• If subbing in elementary, safely and accurately follow dismissal procedures and ensure every student returns home as designated.
• Leave detailed notes about the day, plans and students in writing or email.
• Follow all policies, rules, and procedures to which regular teachers are subject and which good teaching practice dictates.
• Maintain the confidentiality of the position.
• Nurture a positive relationship with super-ordinates, subordinates, and peers.
• Demonstrate respect for super-ordinates, subordinates, and peers.
• Support corporation decisions and direction relative to matters of policy and administrative directives.
• Work as a team player.
• Demonstrate ability to deal with sensitive issues in a tactful and professional manner.
• Address concerns and offer suggestions in an appropriate and confidential manner.
