About The Position

The Norman Topping Student Aid Fund (NTSAF), a unit within the Office of Academic Programs, is seeking TWO Student Programs Advisors to join its team. The Student Programs Advisors will work collaboratively with the NTSAF team to help foster intellectual and personal development for NTSAF Scholars and Fellows through a wide variety of projects and initiatives. The mission of the Norman Topping Student Aid Fund (NTSAF) is to cultivate the development of our Topping Scholars and Fellows to be leaders in their communities. To achieve this mission, the NTSAF serves as a scholarship and holistic support program for first-generation and low-income students, many of whom are from the communities surrounding USC. The NTSAF provides access to resources, strengths-based advising, community service opportunities, and purposeful programming that fosters a sense of belonging, resilience, and growth.

Requirements

  • Proven interpersonal skills working with a variety of different constituents, including, but not limited to, students, families, alumni, faculty, staff and administrators
  • Previous experience dealing with first generation, low-income college students in an institution of higher education
  • Maintain a caring, helpful, compassionate, and professional approach to advising students
  • Must have demonstrated organizational skills, and be able to undertake multiple tasks simultaneously while being able to prioritize
  • Must have demonstrated ability to handle sensitive and confidential student information within FERPA guidelines
  • Ability to work with constituents across a higher education campus environment (including, but not limited to: Administration, Financial Aid, Academic Units, Student Counseling , etc.)
  • Minimum Education : Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum Experience: At least one year of experience in college student advising or a related field
  • Minimum Field of Expertise: education, social sciences, psychology, social work
  • Student program or services experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience with WordPress, Canva, Qualtrics, and video capture tools, preferred
  • Previous experience with conflict resolution or crisis management, preferred
  • Preferred Education : Master’s degree in student Affairs, Higher Education, Counseling, or a related field
  • Preferred Experience: 2+ years of experience in college student advising or a related field
  • Preferred Field Expertise: college student development, higher education administration, educational counseling
  • Knowledge of USC student and academic programs, policies and procedures and knowledge of the student information system.

Responsibilities

  • Provide holistic advising and administrative support to NTSAF Scholars and Fellows on an individual or group basis by helping them navigate the university and its resources.
  • Assist students in creating short and long-term goals to pursue new opportunities that explore academic interests and connect to the campus community (i.e. school, peers, and faculty).
  • Assist with planning and coordinating student programs, program services and special events (i.e. First-Year Transition Program, Topping Leadership Conference, Faculty-Student Luncheon, and other more).
  • Assist in the management and coordination of NTSAF services and programs including program-related community outreach as well as other administrative operations.
  • Collaborate with campus partners to strengthen relationships and improve the quality of the student experience.
  • Proactively disseminate information resources to students and colleagues.
  • Serve as an advocate, advisor and resource in handling student, parent, faculty, and staff concerns, requests, referrals, and grievances, especially with students at-risk or in crisis situations.
  • Utilize the USC Advisement Database, Student Information System (SIS) and other university information systems to access and maintain student records.
  • Stay informed on academic degree programs and academic opportunities.
  • Adhere to the highest standard of ethics and best practices of academic advising.
  • Maintain professional knowledge through participation in associations, committees, and workshops.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Benefits

  • The hourly rate for this position is $29.00 – 30.00.
