About The Position

Learn4Life High School - Charleston is seeking a passionate Student Retention Liaison to work one-on-one with students, helping them overcome obstacles to academic success and graduate high school. This role is part of a unique personalized learning model where staff is unified to achieve the best outcomes for all students. Teachers have a smaller caseload, receive ongoing professional development and support from school leadership, and have access to resources like counselors and tutors. The organization, supported by Lifelong Learning, provides all necessary tools without personal financial investment and offers generous time off.

Requirements

  • 2 years of professional experience in community, youth and family, or school relations work, including experience with courts and law enforcement.
  • Bachelor's degree or 2 years of equivalent experience in a public school environment or social services background.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with students, families/caregivers, school personnel, and community partners.
  • Commitment to inclusivity and understanding of students, families, and barriers from a multicultural perspective.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of various data collection methods and subsequent analysis and interpretation to drive appropriate behavioral interventions.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams).
  • Ability to travel in performance of job duties.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, pull objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Understanding of State public education laws related to Child Welfare and Attendance.
  • Ability to learn, interpret, apply, and communicate school rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Knowledge of prevention and intervention programs for students and families.
  • Knowledge of academic and behavior supports.
  • Knowledge of Trauma Informed Practices (willing to be trained).
  • Knowledge of de-escalation strategies (willing to be trained).
  • Skills in progress monitoring.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills; ability to handle multiple competing projects and meet schedules and timelines.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with teams, parents/legal guardians, students, and school officials.
  • Ability to perform data entry and data compilation from various sources with accuracy.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Self-sufficient and focused on excellent customer service.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement behavior plans and specific intervention plans for students, utilizing resources and technology to foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and prosocial behavior.
  • Work with students in classrooms to achieve goals outlined in their educational plans and conduct ongoing follow-up assessments of progress on behavior plans.
  • Collaborate with school administrators and teachers to identify and develop individualized behavior interventions using evidence-based strategies.
  • Collect data on student behaviors and recommend instructional modifications to promote responsible thinking and decision-making skills.
  • Identify and implement appropriate interventions for students needing additional assistance.
  • Develop skills and self-esteem in students to help them navigate school, leisure, and interpersonal relationships.
  • Provide support to students exhibiting impulsive behaviors, low self-esteem, and impaired social skills.
  • Present professional development to administrators and teachers on topics such as behavior intervention, substance abuse, and anger management, and support staff in implementing new learning.
  • Investigate student absences and withdrawals, encouraging school engagement and readmission.
  • Educate students and families on the importance of regular school attendance and relevant state legislation.
  • Interface with parents, the community, and public officials to represent the organization.
  • Establish and maintain a network of relationships with community organizations and businesses to promote educational solutions and student engagement.
  • Assist families and school staff in accessing community resources.
  • Contact parents/legal guardians and students to understand reasons for absences.
  • Provide support and informational workshops for parents.
  • Build positive and collaborative relationships with students, parents/caregivers, and school staff.
  • Initiate communication and connections with students and parents.
  • Perform assigned administrative duties and responsibilities.
