Student Research Assistant

Chapman University Careers•Irvine, CA

About The Position

The research project aims to make a fiber-optic stress sensor more compact and useful. The work includes miniaturizing device components by designing a photonic integrated circuit and accompanying circuit board, then developing the device for parallel measurements by redesigning a test fixture. The sensor will be used to measure compressive stress-strain curves for visco-elastic materials. Students will learn about optics and photonics while applying circuit design and mechanical engineering to a novel system. The research explores electromagnetic physics, materials science, and electrical engineering, with potential medical applications in testing diseased tissue to improve diagnosis and prognosis.

Requirements

  • Be a current Chapman undergraduate student.
  • Be able and willing to commit 10–20 hours per week during the summer; hours are flexible.
  • Be able to manage tasks and work independently.
  • Be organized and responsible, and able to meet deadlines.
  • Be curious and willing to learn more about optics and photonics.
  • Be interested in learning more about the process of scientific research.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate a fiber-optic stress sensor, including working with optical fiber and lasers.
  • Integrate photonic integrated circuit components into the overall stress sensor design.
  • Write and maintain software to control sensor components, collect data, and display results.
  • Analyze experimental data and iterate on experiments based on the results.
  • Design and manufacture testing fixtures that enable reliable compression of samples.
  • Attend weekly one-on-one meetings with Dr. Harrison to discuss project status and next steps.
  • Participate in weekly lab group meetings to discuss relevant scientific topics, including occasional presentations.
