About The Position

The Student Orientation Lead (SOL) position at California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) is a rewarding opportunity for personal and professional growth. Selected student leaders will assist the Orientation Leader team in planning and implementing orientation programs for first-year, transfer, and parent/family participants. SOLs act as student leaders, peer mentors, educators, CSUSB resource specialists, and role models, playing a crucial role in the successful transition of new students and their families into the CSUSB community. They work under the direction of New Student Orientation and Family Programs staff, primarily the Senior Program Coordinator for Orientation.

  • Admission or registration as a CSU student.
  • Maintain a 2.0 G.P.A. or greater per semester and cumulative.
  • Students must be enrolled in at least halftime units at CSUSB (6 units undergraduate; 3 units graduate).
  • International students must have full-time enrollment at CSUSB (12 units undergraduate; 6 units graduate).
  • Eligible to work in the United States.
  • Possess a Social Security Card.
  • Be an undergraduate, degree-seeking student at CSUSB.
  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress towards degree completion.
  • Uphold all aspects of CSUSB’s Student Conduct Code and be free of disciplinary sanctions.
  • Be available for the full appointment period and participate in all required Orientation activities, including recruitment, training, retreats, First Year Orientation, Transfer Orientation, and Parent and Family Orientation.
  • Complete all required CSU and CSUSB training by established deadlines.
  • Complete CSU Defensive Driving training before operating a golf cart for program purposes.
  • Reside in the State of California.
  • Satisfactory completion of a background check.
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License may be required.
  • Verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire.

Nice To Haves

  • At least one (1) year of previous orientation experience at CSUSB.
  • Maintain a semester and cumulative GPA of 2.7 throughout the term of the position.
  • Demonstrate a desire to learn about CSUSB, its regulations, its people, and its programs, and to share the information with others.

  • Must be a returning student to CSUSB in Fall 2027.
  • Online summer classes may be allowable if they do not interfere with any position responsibilities and will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program.

Responsibilities

  • Support the planning and delivery of mandatory First Year and Transfer Orientation programs and related transition activities.
  • Assist with registration and check-in processes, including preparing materials, organizing participant flow, and resolving concerns.
  • Coordinate setup, breakdown, signage, room readiness, A/V checks, and supply movement; direct Production Crew members.
  • Serve as an on-site point of contact for students, families, guests, Orientation Leaders, and campus partners, providing information and resolving issues.
  • Participate fully in all required orientation sessions, trainings, retreats, and meetings.
  • Assist professional staff with the design and facilitation of Orientation Leader training, including presentations, handouts, and activities.
  • Help plan and support Orientation Leader retreat activities focused on leadership development and team expectations.
  • Provide coaching, feedback, and performance observations to Orientation Leaders, escalating significant concerns to professional staff.
  • Model and reinforce professionalism, inclusive leadership, customer service, punctuality, accountability, teamwork, and appropriate use of university information.
  • Facilitate team-development opportunities and informal check-ins for Orientation Leaders.
  • Support Orientation Leader recruitment by assisting with tabling, promotional materials, and outreach.
  • Assist in designing Orientation Leader information sessions and communicating role expectations.
  • Develop and coordinate social media and other promotional outreach for recruitment.
  • Participate in Orientation Leader Meet and Greets and support interview and selection activities.
  • Organize the New Student Calling Campaign to connect with incoming students and provide pre-orientation information.
  • Create and maintain Orientation Leader caller schedules and SOL office-manager rotations.
  • Assist in developing caller training on scripts, etiquette, FAQs, and FERPA guidance.
  • Track call outcomes, document follow-up needs, and coordinate with campus partners.
  • Assess campaign completion and engagement, summarizing successes and challenges.
  • Partner with the Parent and Family Coordinator to prepare for Parent and Family Orientation, including logistics, materials, and check-in processes.
  • Support family check-in and onsite registration, including material distribution and issue resolution.
  • Assist with English- and Spanish-language programming as needed.
  • Support parent and family campus tours and prepare Orientation Leaders for these tours.
  • Lead or support key programmatic elements such as trivia, resource fairs, and student storytelling.
  • Prepare scripts, transitions, slides, and other resources for program delivery.
  • Collect participation, outreach, and feedback data to recommend improvements.
  • Maintain accurate schedules, records, and project documentation; complete assigned office hours and administrative tasks.
  • Collaborate with staff, departments, and student leaders to coordinate resources.
  • Operate and develop proficiency in PeopleSoft and CampusESP systems for orientation registration support.
  • Perform other duties consistent with the Student Orientation Coordinator role and operational needs.
