About The Position

The Student Orientation Lead (SOL) position at California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) is a rewarding opportunity for personal and professional growth. This role involves assisting the Orientation Leader team in planning and implementing orientation programs for First Year, Transfer, and Parent and Family programs. SOLs act as student leaders, peer mentors, educators, CSUSB resource specialists, and role models, playing a crucial role in the successful transition of new students and their families into the CSUSB community. They work under the direction of New Student Orientation and Family Programs staff, led by the Senior Program Coordinator for Orientation, and are responsible for understanding and adhering to the position description.

  • Admission or registration as a CSU student.
  • Maintain a 2.0 G.P.A. or greater per semester and cumulative.
  • Students must be enrolled in at least halftime units at CSUSB (6 units undergraduate; 3 units graduate).
  • International students must have full-time enrollment at CSUSB (12 units undergraduate; 6 units graduate).
  • Eligible to work in the United States.
  • Possess a Social Security Card.
  • Must be a returning student to CSUSB in Fall 2027.
  • Be available for the full appointment period and participate in all required Orientation activities.
  • Complete all required CSU and CSUSB training by established deadlines.
  • Complete CSU Defensive Driving training before operating a golf cart for program purposes.

Nice To Haves

  • At least one (1) year of previous orientation experience at CSUSB.
  • Maintain a semester and cumulative GPA of 2.7 throughout the term of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Support the planning and delivery of mandatory First Year and Transfer Orientation programs and related transition activities.
  • Assist with registration and check-in processes, including preparing materials, organizing stations, and resolving concerns.
  • Coordinate setup, breakdown, signage, room readiness, A/V checks, and supply movement; direct Production Crew members.
  • Serve as an on-site point of contact for students, families, guests, Orientation Leaders, and campus partners, providing information and resolving issues.
  • Participate fully in all required orientation sessions, trainings, retreats, and meetings.
  • Assist professional staff with the design and facilitation of Orientation Leader training, including developing materials and activities.
  • Plan and support Orientation Leader retreat activities focused on leadership development and team expectations.
  • Provide coaching, feedback, and performance observations to Orientation Leaders, escalating concerns as needed.
  • Model and reinforce professionalism, inclusive leadership, customer service, punctuality, accountability, teamwork, and appropriate use of university information.
  • Facilitate team-development opportunities and informal check-ins for Orientation Leaders.
  • Support Orientation Leader recruitment efforts to attract a diverse applicant pool.
  • Assist with tabling strategies, promotional materials, and outreach schedules.
  • Help design Orientation Leader information sessions, prepare speaking notes, and communicate role expectations.
  • Develop and coordinate social media and other promotional outreach for recruitment.
  • Participate in Orientation Leader Meet and Greets and support interview and selection activities.
  • Organize the New Student Calling Campaign to build early connections with incoming students.
  • Create and maintain Orientation Leader caller schedules and SOL office-manager rotations.
  • Assist in developing caller training on scripts, call etiquette, FAQs, FERPA guidance, and data privacy.
  • Track call outcomes, document follow-up needs, and coordinate with campus partners.
  • Assess campaign completion, engagement, and feedback, summarizing successes and challenges.
  • Partner with the Parent and Family Coordinator to prepare agendas, logistics, materials, and feedback tools for Parent and Family Orientation.
  • Support family check-in and onsite registration, including issue resolution.
  • Assist with English- and Spanish-language programming as needed.
  • Support parent and family campus tours and prepare Orientation Leaders for tours.
  • Recruit and prepare Orientation Leaders for student-storytelling opportunities.
  • Lead or support key programmatic elements such as trivia, the campus resource fair, and student storytelling.
  • Prepare scripts, transitions, slides, and other resources for program delivery.
  • Collect participation, outreach, and feedback data to recommend improvements.
  • Maintain accurate schedules, records, shared resources, and project documentation.
  • Collaborate with staff, departments, presenters, and student leaders.
  • Operate and develop proficiency in PeopleSoft and CampusESP systems for orientation registration.
  • Perform other duties consistent with the Student Orientation Coordinator role and operational needs.
