About The Position

The Peer Support Program aims to empower emerging student leaders to support the Malcolm X Community. Student Mentors, also known as Peer Advocates, work with the Wellness Center to promote counseling services, share personal experiences, encourage self-sufficiency, assist students in achieving their goals, and make appropriate referrals to the Wellness Center.

Requirements

  • Applicants must be 16 years or older.
  • Must have work permit consent.
  • Eligible to work in the United States.
  • Genuine desire to assist peers and be a positive influence and role-model.
  • Good interpersonal skills with a positive attitude and ease in relating to people from a variety of educational, cultural and social backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of key campus resources and a developed relationship with the Wellness Center team.
  • Commitment to the full duration of the program.
  • Actively attending one of the City Colleges of Chicago.
  • Pursuing an approved educational credential, degree, or certificate.
  • Enrolled in a minimum of 6 semester hours pre-credit or credit classes.
  • Achieved a 2.0 or higher cumulative GPA at Malcolm X College (waived for first semester new students).
  • Must be in “good standing” – no City Colleges of Chicago academic restrictions.
  • Must have Malcolm X College as their home campus.
  • Familiarity with the student portal and the City Colleges of Chicago website.
  • Must not be current Full or Part-time employees of the City Colleges of Chicago.

Nice To Haves

  • Students not meeting the GPA requirement are still encouraged to apply, but should be prepared to outline any mitigating circumstances and a detailed plan to pursue academic success in essay format.

Responsibilities

  • Advises, guides, and serves as a role model for other students transitioning to college life.
  • Explains the CCC system to interested students.
  • Helps students become aware of College resources.
  • Advises and refers students to appropriate College resources.
  • Provides information on study techniques, organizational skills, and learning aids to support student transition to college life.
  • Meets with assigned mentee(s) twice per month to advise.
  • Assists with setting goals and works toward accomplishing each.
  • Advocates for mentee as necessary.
  • Attends mentor training sessions as required.
  • Records observations and submits reports to assigned supervisor as required.
  • Adheres to the City Colleges of Chicago Customer Service Excellence Standards.

Benefits

  • Hourly Rate: $17.05 per hour.
  • The rate paid is in accordance with City Colleges approved salary scale.
