About The Position

The Student Managing Editor guides section editors and illustrators in the day-to-day production of the newspaper following the Editor-in-Chief’s instructions. They also support the office operations and perform various duties as directed by the Student Editor in Chief and Student Media Manager. The Student Managing Editor will fulfill the duties of Editor in Chief if the position becomes vacant within an academic year.

Requirements

  • Must have at least one year of journalism-related or art experience and be enrolled in related discipline (Journalism, Communications, English, etc.).
  • Must be a current and active CSULB student enrolled in a minimum of 6 units.
  • Must be an excellent writer who also understands the intricacies and legalities of publishing such as grammar, punctuation, writing technique/ styles, slander, libel, and newspaper layout etc.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous volunteer experience with 22 West Media preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates weekly operations including copy and layout with the section editors and staff.
  • Assists with training and advising of all section editors, including providing critiques to editors on improvements for the newspaper's content, layout, and style.
  • Responsible for scheduling all main features for the academic year. Coordinates and assigns staff and volunteers to cover and write features in a timely and consistent manner.
  • Attends the weekly meetings of 22 West Magazine management staff and volunteer staff meetings.
  • Represents 22 West Magazine to the University at large as needed.
  • Coordinates special projects as agreed upon with the Student Editor-in-Chief and Student Media Manager.
  • Attends the biweekly staff meeting.
  • Prepare any report for the 22 West Leads meeting.
  • Other duties as assigned, reasonably within the scope of the job.
