About The Position

Building and maintaining provincial infrastructure is a significant undertaking. We are seeking summer students to assist our province in achieving its goals. The Department of Public Works is responsible for managing 23,000 kilometers of roads and 4,100 bridges across Nova Scotia. Our District Highway Operations Division plays a vital role in snow and ice control, as well as road maintenance and repair services throughout the province. As a Summer Student Labourer, you will gain practical experience, receive training, and be mentored by highly qualified technical professionals. This is an excellent opportunity to launch your career, learn about bridge and highway construction, and see your contributions make a tangible impact on Nova Scotia's provincial road network.

Requirements

  • High school student, at least 16 years of age.
  • Returning to school in the fall or the next applicable semester.
  • Demonstrate a keen interest in highway and bridge construction and maintenance activities.
  • Excellent communicator who provides professional customer service.
  • Team player.
  • Safety aware.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in situations.
  • Ability to follow safe work practices.

Nice To Haves

  • Valid Class 5 driver's license is preferred.
  • Acceptable driver abstract must be submitted before employment begins.
  • Familiarity with construction sites.
  • Exposure to heavy equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with a wide range of highway construction and maintenance duties.
  • Participate in manual brush cutting.
  • Paint lines and trucks.
  • Perform litter pickup.
  • Conduct general building and yard maintenance.
