About The Position

The Student Lab Assistant provides laboratory preparation, maintenance, and cleaning. Working alongside department staff, the Student Lab Assistant prepares lab materials for classroom use and assists in managing supply areas. This position is open to students with Federal Work Study eligibility and requires enrollment of at least six credits for the semester. The role involves assisting with the maintenance and operation of science labs, preparing materials and equipment, ensuring proper storage and cleanliness, and assisting with supply management. Work will be performed on-site in various campus locations and may serve disciplines such as General Biology, Anatomy & Physiology, and Microbiology.

Requirements

  • Must have Federal Work Study as part of their current Financial Aid package with Columbus State.
  • Must be enrolled in SIX or more credit hours in a degree or certificate program.
  • Must have received a high school diploma or a certificate of attendance from an accredited secondary school or a certificate of high school equivalence and be exempt from Ohio Revised Code Chapter 4109.
  • Must have reliable transportation or other means to get to work regularly.
  • Students enrolled as Transient, College Credit Plus, Undecided, or otherwise non-degree-seeking are not considered eligible for Student Employment.
  • Applicants without Federal Work Study eligibility will not be considered for this position.
  • Hired students will not be eligible to assist with lab assignments if currently enrolled in the corresponding lab course.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the department staff and/or faculty in the maintenance and operation of the departmental science labs.
  • Prepares materials and supplies for laboratories and ensures equipment is ready for use, including assisting in preparing solutions, setting up equipment carts, and returning supplies to their proper area in lab.
  • Sets up materials and supplies in classrooms as needed and collects materials and supplies following use, including monitoring laboratory benches for cleanliness.
  • Ensures equipment is stored properly.
  • Assists in general maintenance and cleaning of equipment.
  • Assists with check-in and storage of delivered supplies.
  • Assists in monitoring levels of supplies and replenishing as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
