About The Position

The City of San José, the Capital of Silicon Valley, is one of the nation's best managed cities and one of the top cities in which to live, work, and do business. The City's Public Works Department is seeking an individual whose values align with the values of the City's employees. The Department of Public Works is responsible for delivering capital improvement projects for a wide variety of City facilities and infrastructure, maintaining City facilities and fleet assets, facilitating, and regulating development activities, and providing animal care and services. The Department is committed to high-quality service, partnering with the community, and providing an excellent environment in which to work. This is a part-time, unbenefited internship position within the Engineering Services Division, Survey Section. The duration of the assignment is approximately three (3) to six (6) months, with the possibility of extension based on project needs.

Requirements

  • Current enrollment in an accredited college or university in an undergraduate program (for Undergraduate Student Intern).
  • Completion of a bachelor’s degree and current enrollment in a master’s degree program from an accredited college or university (for Graduate Student Intern).
  • Possession of a valid driver's license authorizing the operation of a motor vehicle in the State of California may be required for some positions.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Survey crew with measurements, note-keeping, and field equipment set up.
  • Participates in office data review and field investigations of storm and sanitary sewer manhole/invert dimensions.
  • Performs map and plan reviews under close supervision.
  • Assist with office record map research and field book scanning.
  • Assist Survey crews with field checks for city street monuments and punching.
  • Perform monument corner record edits with Computer Aided Drafting (CAD).
  • Calculate simple math and engineering computations.
  • Enter data into spreadsheets and compile reports.
