About The Position

The New Haven Police Department (NHPD) is offering Academic Internship Programs for undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled in an accredited criminal justice course. Applications are reviewed on a case-by-case basis, with placement dependent on department needs, student qualifications, and goals. Internships require approval from the student's academic advisor and the New Haven Police Training Academy Commander. Selected students must sign release forms for background checks, Ride-Along Waivers, and a confidentiality agreement. The internship program offers three sessions annually: Winter-Spring, Summer, and Fall, with specific application periods and durations for each. Communication with applicants will be solely via email.

• Must be an undergraduate or graduate student currently enrolled in an accredited college course of criminal justice.

Responsibilities

• Observe and assist with forensic work in a laboratory setting.
• Assist with locating, organizing, and documenting evidence from crime scenes.
• Assist detectives during crime scene operations.
• Observe and assist in organizing officer schedules, planning for special events, and deployment of the Motor Unit and Accident Reconstruction Team.
• Assist detectives with investigations and documentation of different types of crimes.
• Review financial crime reports and determine if they meet the threshold for further investigation.
• Learn about financial scams and victim protection methods.
• Contact complainants to obtain additional information.
• Shadow Detectives during investigations to learn about financial crime investigation processes.
• Attend meetings with the Special Victims Unit (SVU) supervisor and/or Detectives.
• Review investigative reports and lab analysis.
• Assist Detectives with the investigation of cases and shadow their investigations.
• Perform office filing and auditing for the SVU.
• Analyze shots fired incidents throughout the city.
• Learn the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) report system.
• Prepare PowerPoint presentations.
• Assist in identifying wanted persons in the City of New Haven.
• Attend meetings with the Intelligence Unit.
• Assist in preparing other reports as needed.
• Work with plainclothes Detectives and Task Force Officers.
• Assist with the processing of officer certification and in-service training.
• Disseminate information to sworn personnel via practical training and lineup training.
• Assist in the set-up of In-Service classes for officer certification.
• Coordinate instructors to assist the Police Officers Standards and Training Council.
• Assist in various tasks to aid in the seamless training of new recruits and development.
