About The Position

Student Technicians leverage their knowledge and training within network operations to provide client support for issues with layers 1 through 3 of the OSI model. Opportunities include: Introduction to Networks, understanding of system interconnect via Data Link, Network Operations, Security and Policy, Configuration and management, and IP schema.

Requirements

  • Must be a degree-seeking UNM student enrolled within a college program.
  • Must have a state or government-issued ID.
  • Must have a state or government-issued driver’s license.
  • High School diploma, GED, or equivalent certification.
  • Knowledgeable of the use of standard processing and emulation software (Microsoft Office, Visio/Lucid Chart, Putty/TeraTerm/Termius).
  • Introductory understanding of IT systems and networks, methods of network connection, as well as computer components and modules.
  • At least 1 year of work experience; to include volunteer, customer service, industry, and/or relevant IT field.

Nice To Haves

  • IT certifications such as A+ and/or Network +.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for daily operations of the Data Network, including acknowledging tickets and handling network triage for Layers 1 and 2.
  • Assist in maintaining 24/7 client support during scheduled hours.
  • Support staff during critical service restoration operations by providing on-site verification and coordinating with staff to restore service.
  • Maintain diagrams, documents, and records, including modifying and/or correcting diagrams and documents within the central repository, and appending or creating listings on the CMDB and IBN within ServiceNow and NetBox.
  • Perform daily and weekly duties including vehicle maintenance/inspection and cleaning, storeroom organization and inventory management, surplus collation and submission, team meetings/trainings, and spare device management.
  • Handle all Port Activation Request (PARs) within the guided timeline.
  • Manage IP address requests, including White/Blacklists.
  • Address general campus LAN/WLAN connectivity issues up to Layer 3.
  • Complete university mandatory yearly training and driver training.
