About The Position

This position involves acting as a mentor to students in various THEA courses, including Production Practicum, Theatre Practicum, Costume Crafts, and Costume & Lighting/Sound Technology. The role requires active participation in costume design and production, including assisting designers, shopping for materials, managing wardrobe, coordinating costumes, and performing various sewing and crafting tasks. The student employee will also be responsible for maintaining the organization and cleanliness of costume shop spaces, managing their own work hours, and communicating effectively with team members and supervisors.

Responsibilities

  • Act as mentors to those involved in THEA courses: Production Practicum, Theatre Practicum, Costume Crafts, Costume & Lighting/Sound Technology.
  • Act in various capacities including Costume Designer Assistant, Costume Designer Shopper, Wardrobe Supervisor, Costume Coordinator, Tailor, Draper, First Hand, Stitcher, Costume PA, Wardrobe Crew/Dressers.
  • Perform laundry duties for costumes.
  • Maintain organization in all Costume Shop spaces.
  • Measure performers for mainstage productions.
  • Schedule work hours with the Costume Shop Manager.
  • Notify the Costume Shop Manager in advance of any necessary absences.
  • Sew costumes assigned by the Cutter/Draper, Costume Shop Manager, or Costume Designer, using machine or hand techniques.
  • Craft or adapt costume accessories using various techniques as assigned.
  • Manage time effectively on each construction project.
  • Maintain a personal work area, including sewing machinery.
  • Communicate with other team members concerning problems and their possible solutions.
  • Perform other sewing and organizing duties as assigned.
  • Put away tools and supplies after use, and use proper safety equipment when required.
  • Check stock levels of regularly used items (thread, fasteners, Velcro, elastic) and notify the Costume Shop Manager.
  • Discuss laundry procedures with the show’s Costume Designer or designee.
  • Take notes as necessary.
  • Identify all costumes requiring special handling and follow specific laundering instructions.
