About The Position

This is a part-time, non-benefited position for UND students only. The Student Design Center (SDC), in partnership with the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT), the Transportation Technical Research Initiative (TTRI), and UND, provides engineering students with hands-on experience on real-world transportation designs and engineering issues. As a Student Design Assistant, students receive on-the-job training under the direction of NDDOT engineers, preparing studies, plans, and estimates for NDDOT projects. SDC students are highly sought after by the NDDOT and other agencies, consultants, and employers due to their advanced skills.

Requirements

  • Must be a UND student in good academic standing.
  • Must be able to work in an office setting.
  • Must successfully complete a Criminal History Background Check.
  • Must verify identity and eligibility to work in the US and complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire.
  • Must have a strong interest in Civil Engineering, transportation, or related engineering disciplines.
  • Must be able to work 10 hours per week.

Responsibilities

  • Learn geometric highway design through NDDOT projects and be educated on current Design & Construction practices.
  • Perform engineering calculations, including geometrics, cost estimates, and quantities.
  • Write technical reports for preliminary engineering and environmental documentation, exploring project options to aid management decisions.
  • Utilize Microstation/ORD design software for plan sheet development and 3D modeling (training provided).
  • Communicate ideas clearly, both orally and in writing, with supervisors and other Student Design Assistants to coordinate project progress, completion, and review, meeting deadlines and expectations.
  • Potentially participate in field reviews, public input meetings, and other design review meetings.
  • Potentially shadow a field engineer and tour active construction projects.
  • Potentially visit other Divisions and Districts within the NDDOT.
  • Potentially network with other professionals in the transportation industry.
  • Potentially create resources and/or presentations on specific design tasks.
