About The Position

PLNU is seeking a compassionate, organized, and collaborative individual to join the Student Care & Counseling team. The ideal candidate has a passion for students, excellent interpersonal skills, strong attention to detail, and the ability to handle complex situations with professionalism, empathy, and discretion. This role requires strong communication skills, the ability to work collaboratively, and the initiative to manage responsibilities independently. The successful candidate will be a quick learner, eager to take ownership of projects, coordinate care across campus, and contribute to improving the student experience. This is a fast-paced, student-centered environment where sound judgment, critical thinking, and calm crisis response are essential.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, counseling, psychology or related field or the equivalent combination of education and experience/training required.
  • Demonstrated deep commitment to inclusive and diverse practices that recognize intersectionality and multiple identities in support of student wellbeing and development.
  • Experience advising, coaching and/or providing advocacy for students in a higher education environment.
  • Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.
  • Demonstrated experience in problem-solving, decision making, conflict resolution, negotiation, counseling, referral techniques and confidentiality.
  • Candidates should be team oriented and demonstrate adaptability, initiative, and the ability to respond effectively to crises.
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with ability to handle several projects simultaneously.
  • 1-3 years of professional experience in higher education, social work, or other related field.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and anti-racist practices.
  • Direct experience providing advocacy and support for underrepresented students in a higher education setting.
  • Evidence of Christian commitment and active church involvement.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in psychology, social work, counseling, or related field preferred.
  • Crisis management experience preferred.
  • Title IX experience/training preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience working with a diverse population is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for students navigating personal, academic, emotional, financial, or relational challenges.
  • Develop holistic, data-informed Care Plans that connect students with the appropriate campus and community resources.
  • Coordinate care with partners across the university, including Student Care, Academic Affairs, Residential Life, Student Conduct, Title IX, the Educational Access Center, and other student support offices.
  • Triage student concerns, provide advocacy and mentoring, facilitate referrals, ensure consistent follow-up, and maintain thorough and timely case documentation.
  • Support the university's student wellbeing initiatives through collaborative case management, crisis response, and proactive outreach.
  • Build and maintain relationships with community providers and referral partners to expand support options for students.
  • Assist with the Bounce Back (STS 2090-1) course through Canvas support, grading, course facilitation, and student engagement.
  • Contribute to division-wide projects and initiatives that strengthen PLNU's commitment to helping students thrive.
