About The Position

Golden West College (GWC) is seeking a Student Assistant for the 2026/2027 Academic Year. This program offers students the opportunity to earn money, continue their education, gain experience working within the institution, and combine academic study with on-the-job experience. Student employment opportunities are temporary and can range from summer jobs to positions lasting as long as the student is enrolled. These roles can be related to academic fields of study but are not required to be. Student Assistants perform duties that can range from unskilled to skilled and/or specialized, often involving manual, clerical, and public contact tasks. The nature of the job varies by department, with assignments typically requiring limited discretion and judgment, and work being regularly reviewed. Student Assistant job assignments are flexible and take into account class timings and exam schedules. Students can choose assignments that align with their academic and career goals and interests, as available. The specific duties and responsibilities will vary depending on the department's needs and the level of the Student Assistant (I, II, or III).

Requirements

  • Must be a full-time student enrolled in a minimum of 12 units at one of the three colleges within the Coast Community College District (OCC, GWC, CCC).
  • Students who are part-time may qualify for federal work-study programs or other available grants – completion of the Financial Aid application (FAFSA) is required, checking the box for Federal Work-Study interest.
  • Employment is contingent upon verification of class schedule.
  • Employment is contingent upon verification of employment history.
  • Employment is contingent upon background verification as governed under Education Code requirements.
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States.
  • Employment is contingent upon approval by the CCCD Board of Trustees.
  • Must have fingerprints taken by a Live Scan computer at the candidate’s expense (Clearance must be received prior to the first day of employment).
  • Must present original documents for proof of eligibility to work in the United States including a Social Security Card.
  • Must participate in a new hire onboarding appointment with an Employment Services Representative.
  • Complete Online Employment Application (education and work experience/volunteer experience must be completed).
  • Attach Current Class schedule (Academic Year Fall 2026 / Spring 2027).
  • Attach Letter of Verification of full-time student status from the Disabled Student Programs and Services, if carrying less than 12 units and approved for accommodation.

Nice To Haves

  • Student Assistant II: Some previous knowledge, experience, or education required.
  • Student Assistant III: Prior experience, education, or specialized skills required.
  • Student Assistant II: Minimum of one year of experience in the same student assistant assignment.
  • Student Assistant III: Minimum of two years of experience in the same student assistant assignment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform duties from unskilled to skilled and/or specialized in a variety of positions.
  • Utilize manual, clerical, and public contact skills.
  • Vary duties depending on the department and specific assignment.
  • Perform standardized duties that are routine and repetitive (Student Assistant I).
  • Use special equipment, software applications, or tools per established procedures (Student Assistant I).
  • Perform varied and less routine assignments involving a moderate degree of responsibility (Student Assistant II).
  • Access and use sophisticated data systems and confidential information (Student Assistant II).
  • Apply considerable independent judgment, analysis, and decision-making skills (Student Assistant II & III).
  • Direct the work of lower-level student employees (Student Assistant III).
  • Balance work and studies effectively.
