About The Position

The Federal Work-Study (FWS) program provides part-time employment to students with significant financial need, as determined by federal guidelines. The federal government covers a portion of the student's salary, with the school paying the remainder. FWS is part of a student's overall financial aid package and is intended to offer a balance between the student's interests and the department's needs, allowing students to gain experience related to their career objectives or develop new skills. This position is for the 2026-2027 Academic Year at Orange Coast College (OCC), a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and an Asian American Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI) committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and access.

Requirements

  • Students must be enrolled in classes for the current semester.
  • Must have been awarded federal work-study through the financial aid office to be eligible.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, geographic, gender, gender identity, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
  • Complete Online Employment Application (education and work experience/volunteer experience must be thoroughly completed).
  • Attach a copy of your Current Class Schedule (Academic Year Fall 2026 / Spring 2027) - PDF recommended.
  • Attach a copy of your Federal Work-Study Award Email - PDF recommended.
  • Evidence of demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, geographic, gender, gender identity, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
  • Employment is contingent upon verification of federal work-study award, class schedule, employment history, background verification as governed under Education Code requirements, eligibility to work in the United States, and approval by the CCCD Board of Trustees.

Responsibilities

  • Perform duties from unskilled to skilled and/or specialized in a variety of positions that typically require the use of manual, clerical, and public contact.
  • Duties will vary depending on the nature of the assignment and the needs of the respective department.
  • Student Assistant I: Work is under immediate supervision, involving standardized duties that are routine and repetitive. May involve the use of special equipment, software applications, or tools per established procedure.
  • Student Assistant II: Work is under general supervision, with varied and less routine assignments involving a moderate degree of responsibility. May involve access to and use of sophisticated data systems and confidential information. Requires moderate independent judgment, analysis, and decision-making skills.
  • Student Assistant III: Work is under general supervision, involving a broad variety of skills and/or tasks. Requires considerable independent judgment and decision-making. May involve directing the work of lower-level student employees.
