About The Position

Student Career Advocates (SCAs) assist in the daily operations of the Center for Career Education and Exploration. SCAs connect with fellow students to help them grow professionally. SCAs lead presentations, meet with students, edit documents such as resumes and cover letters, interact with employers looking to hire SFA students and more. This is a federal work-study student position.

Requirements

The minimum education required for admittance as a student at Stephen F. Austin State University.
No direct experience is required.
A student must be awarded and accept a “Work-Study Permit” for the semester.
Maintain an overall GPA of 2.5 or higher and must be in good standing with the university.
Student must have received a work-study award.
Knowledge of professional telephone and email etiquette.
Knowledge of general office and clerical procedures and concepts.
Skill in the use of standard office equipment and software.
Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
Ability to communicate professionally and courteously with university faculty and staff, students, and the general public.
Ability to understand and follow procedures and directions.
Ability to work independently and collectively.
Ability to demonstrate initiative and accomplish goals and expectations.
Ability to manage multiple tasks, problem solve, be flexible and learn quickly.
Ability to accurately prepare and maintain records and files.
Ability to demonstrate maturity, trustworthiness, responsibility, motivation, cheerfulness, and dependability as a worker.
A student must be enrolled in six or more semester hours to be eligible for student employment during the fall or spring semesters.
To be eligible for student employment during the summer, a student must be enrolled in three or more semester hours or be registered for courses in the upcoming fall semester.
Student assistants may not hold any other type of position such as a graduate assistantship or temporary casual employment at the same time that they are employed as a student assistant.

Responsibilities

Provides office assistance to the department by completing routine clerical duties and responsibilities.
Responds to various internal and external inquiries by managing emails, multi-line phone system, and in-person requests.
Provides clear and effective customer service and communication with a variety of audiences.
Assists in the preparation, marketing and implementation of departmental programs and activities including special events, workshops, resource tables, presentations, Career Closet, and other activities as needed.
Receives training on and completes professional document critiques and edits through online submissions and in-person appointments.
Manages Handshake, an online career platform, for student, employer and departmental accounts.
Helps coordinate, prepare and execute career fairs.
Leads presentations on student professional development.
Works in a team environment to accomplish departmental goals and expectations.
Completes required trainings as assigned.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
