The Mechanical Systems, Externals, and Nacelles (MSEN) structures team is seeking an intern to perform structural analyses of mechanical systems and externals hardware on commercial engine programs. Hardware may include bearing supports, bearing centering springs, spacers, shafts, bearings, seals, gearboxes, oil tanks, fan drive gear systems, tubes, brackets, nozzles, mounts, and ducts. The intern will support finite element analyses, use Pratt & Whitney tools for life estimations, document results for structures discipline reviews, participate in multidisciplinary integrated product teams, and present analysis results. The intern will perform structural analysis throughout the product development cycle, from concept initiation and preliminary and detailed design through testing, validation, certification, and post-certification. The role includes recommending design trade-offs among structural, performance, weight, and producibility requirements; supporting rig and engine validation testing; monitoring critical instrumentation for key learning points and health and safety; reducing and analyzing test data; and confirming that test objectives are met. The intern will use finite element analysis and classical methods to evaluate component strength, stiffness, deflection, vibration, fatigue life, and damage tolerance. The internship is onsite in East Hartford, Connecticut. Applicants must be U.S. citizens because only U.S. citizens are authorized to access information under the program or contract. No security clearance is required. The internship program provides challenging projects and opportunities to learn about the aerospace industry and RTX operations.
