About The Position

This position is for a Structure Maintainer – Group E, also known as a Plumber, at New York City Transit. The role involves performing plumbing work within MTA New York City Transit’s subway, surface, and elevated structures, including stations, enclosures, tunnels, and related buildings. The position is full-time and regular, with the possibility of obtaining permanent civil service status after passing the next Civil Service Exam. The work location is various, and the hours of work are also various.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a four-year full-time apprenticeship program in the plumbing trade recognized by the N.Y. State Department of Labor, U.S. Department of Labor, or any state apprenticeship council recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor.
  • Four years of full-time journey-level experience as a plumber.
  • Two years of full-time journey-level experience as a plumber, plus one of the following: two years of full-time experience as a helper, apprentice or trainee in the plumbing trade; graduation from an approved trade school or technical school with a major in plumbing (600 hours); graduation from a vocational high school with a major in plumbing; or an Associate degree or higher in plumbing from an accredited college or university.
  • Possess either a Class A or Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) valid in New York State with no disqualifying restrictions, or a valid New York State Motor Vehicle Driver License and a Learner Permit for a Class B CDL with no disqualifying restrictions (appointment is conditional on obtaining a Class B CDL within six months).
  • Ability to understand and be understood in English.
  • Must be able to prove identity and right to work in the United States.
  • Must pass a drug screening.
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position, with reasonable accommodation if necessary.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a Pipe Welder, Pipefitter, Master Plumber, Plumbing Installer, Residential Plumber, or Service Plumber.
  • Active member or former member (discharged within the past year) of the military or New York National Guard with experience driving a Commercial Motor Vehicle (may be eligible for a waiver of the NYS commercial driving skills test).

Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, and repair plumbing fixtures in toilets, sink rooms, and heating systems.
  • Clean, test, dismantle, install, and repair pipes, fixtures, vents, and hot water heaters.
  • Keep records and perform other structural work when necessary, including incidental painting.
  • May serve as a flagger and respond appropriately to signals on the tracks.
  • Load, unload, and drive vans and trucks.
  • Perform related work.
