Track Equipment Maintainer (Automotive Mechanic) (Provisional)
About The Position
This is a provisional position at New York City Transit for an Automotive Mechanic (Track Equipment Maintainer). If hired, you must pass the next Civil Service Exam and be hired from the resulting list for this title to obtain permanent civil service status. The role involves inspecting, testing, maintaining, altering, repairing, and operating various types of equipment used in the construction, maintenance, and repair of railroad track within the MTA New York City Transit's subway system. This includes a wide range of machinery and vehicles, as well as record-keeping and reporting.
Requirements
- Completion of a four-year full-time apprenticeship in an electro-mechanical trade recognized by the New York State Department of Labor, the U.S Department of Labor or any state apprenticeship council which is recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor.
- Two years of full-time satisfactory journey-level mechanic experience in the testing, operation, maintenance, alteration and repair of the mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic components and systems of heavy equipment used in construction or track maintenance/repair (e.g., compressors, drills, payloaders, tractors, conveyors, including gasoline and diesel engines) OR transportation vehicles (e.g., automobiles, trucks, buses, marine vessels, aircraft).
- The journey-level mechanic experience must be preceded by one of the following: two years of experience as a mechanic’s helper, apprentice, or trainee; graduation from a recognized trade school or technical school with a major in a mechanical or electrical trade (600 hours); graduation from a vocational high school with a major in a mechanical or electrical trade; or an A.A.S. degree or higher in electro-mechanical or electronic technology from an accredited college or university.
- A Class A or Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) valid in the State of New York with an endorsement for hazardous materials and no disqualifying restrictions.
- OR a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York and a Learner Permit for a Class B CDL valid in the State of New York with an endorsement for hazardous materials and no disqualifying restrictions (appointment is subject to obtaining the full Class B CDL within six months).
- Must be able to understand and be understood in English.
- Must be able to prove identity and right to work in the U.S.
Responsibilities
- Inspect, test, maintain, alter, repair and operate electromechanical, electronic, hydraulic, and pneumatic equipment used in the construction, maintenance and repair of railroad track.
- Maintain, repair and operate cranes, tampers, compressors, front-end loaders, engines and motors, rail saws, chain saws, payloaders, forklifts, conveyors, track lubricators, ballast regulators, snow blowers, grease pumps, and machine shop equipment.
- Drive trucks.
