About The Position
General Dynamics NASSCO is seeking 5 Structural Welders (J1-J4) for the day shift (6 am - 2:45 pm with a 45-minute lunch) to join their Steel Shop team in Norfolk, Virginia. This role is crucial for ship construction, repair, conversion, and maintenance for both commercial and national defense assets. Successful candidates must be able to access all Navy installations and other shipyards by obtaining DBIDS and NAVSEA badges.
Requirements
- High School Diploma/GED
- 2 years directly related ship building/ship repair experience.
- Ability to access all Navy installations and other shipyards by obtaining DBIDS and NAVSEA badges.
- Proficient in using SMAW, GMAW and FCAW welding process.
- Ability to weld steel, aluminum, copper nickel, stainless steel.
- Ability to read weld gauges.
- Ability to use hand tools.
- Knowledge of standard item 1689 and the guidelines of 5 S.
- Ability to hook up oxygen and acetylene torch.
- Ability to use hand tools with supervision (for J2).
- Ability to use hand tools with little supervision (for J3).
- Ability to use hand tools with close supervision (for J1).
- Must be able to go on vessels.
- Must be able to access all Navy installations and other shipyards by obtaining DBIDS and NAVSEA badges.
Nice To Haves
- Knowledge of welding on different types of base metals (HY-80 & HY-100) (for J4).
- Know the different wire and gas combinations (for J4).
- Quality of weld should be acceptable for N.D.T. (for J4).
- Should have knowledge of weld symbols (for J1).
Responsibilities

- Weld steel, aluminum, copper nickel, stainless steel.

- Ensure quality of weld is acceptable for N.D.T.
- Weld some pipe using SMAW process (for J3).
- Knowledge of welding on different types of base metals (HY-80 & HY-100) (for J4).
- Knowledge of weld symbols (for J1).
