Engineer Structural - Level 3 - Devens

Northrop Grumman•Harvard, MA
•$114,000 - $171,000

About The Position

Adaptive Optics Associates – Xinetics (AOA Xinetics), a wholly owned subsidiary of Northrop Grumman Space Systems, is seeking a Structural Engineer to support Xinetics program activities in Devens, Massachusetts. AOA Xinetics designs, develops, and manufactures precision optical products and systems, including deformable mirrors, optical systems, adaptive optics control systems, and silicon carbide optical structures for government, commercial, and defense customers. The engineer will perform mechanical analysis for space, ground, and airborne opto-mechanical or electro-mechanical components, systems, and subsystems. The role involves building and evaluating finite element models, conducting analyses of complex materials and systems, supporting design optimization, documenting and presenting results, and planning and correlating mechanical tests. The position also calls for technical problem-solving, peer review, and travel to customer and supplier sites as required. Relocation assistance may be available. The role requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret clearance and U.S. citizenship.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline with 5 years of relevant experience, or a master's degree with 3 years of relevant experience, or a Ph.D. with 1 year of relevant experience.
  • Experience performing Finite Element Analysis (FEA) using NASTRAN and/or Ansys.
  • Mechanical analysis/FEA experience in a regulated industry.
  • Experience with both linear and nonlinear analysis.
  • Experience with kinematic, dynamic, heat transfer, structural, CTE, vibration, and shock analyses.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to present complex technical information clearly.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret clearance.
  • U.S. citizenship is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with opto-mechanical systems in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with NX CAD, SolidWorks, or CREO.
  • Experience with related analysis tools such as Sigfit, Zemax, or Matlab.
  • Detailed knowledge of FEA and ASME Y14.5M GD&T specifications.
  • Experience with large and small lens and mirror mounting techniques.
  • Flexure and kinematic mount design and analysis experience.
  • Space environment design and analysis experience.
  • Knowledge of adhesive applications and bonding techniques in opto-mechanical designs.
  • Experience with silicon carbide or ceramic materials.

Responsibilities

  • Perform mechanical analysis for space, ground, and airborne opto-mechanical or electro-mechanical components, systems, and subsystems.
  • Work with product teams to optimize designs to meet customer requirements.
  • Document and present analytical results and approaches, including the capabilities and limitations of analyses and tools.
  • Build finite element models for structural scenarios, considering accuracy, model quality, and reusability.
  • Develop models for kinematic, dynamic, heat transfer, structural, CTE, vibration, and shock analyses on complex materials, structural components, or functional systems.
  • Perform full-system and component analyses and evaluate results.
  • Proactively champion design improvements to meet mechanical performance requirements.
  • Plan, perform, and document relevant mechanical testing, and correlate finite element models using test data.
  • Use engineering judgment and correlated model data to evaluate the quality of finite element results.
  • Comprehend and interpret technical drawings, applying working knowledge of ANSI Y14.5.
  • Create or modify part and assembly solid models to support mechanical analyses.
  • Conduct peer reviews of work products.
  • Provide technical solutions to complex problems requiring technical acumen, ingenuity, and creativity.
  • Travel to customer and supplier sites as required.
