Structural Engineer V

Arcfield•Louisville, CO

About The Position

The Structural Engineer V leads and assists with structural analysis of small satellites, payloads, sub-assemblies, and ground support equipment. The role develops and executes finite element models (FEM) using NASA and military standards, performs first-principles calculations, and conducts linear and nonlinear static, dynamic, and thermal analyses to evaluate stress margins, fatigue life, and potential failure modes. The engineer collaborates with design engineers to optimize structural designs, materials, and configurations for performance, weight, cost, safety, and reliability. The role also conducts trade studies and sensitivity analyses, documents findings in technical reports and presentations, provides structural input throughout design and test planning, and collaborates with test engineers and technicians on model validation and ground and flight test plans. Additional work includes using CAD software to develop satellite components and ground support equipment, supporting environmental test campaigns, improving analysis processes, specifying structural and mechanical hardware, and supporting quoting efforts.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and 10–12 years of professional work experience, or a master's degree and 8–10 years, or a Ph.D. and 5–7 years.
  • At least 5 years of professional work experience in the space industry.
  • At least 5 years of experience in structural analysis.
  • At least 3 years of experience in mechanical design for small satellites using CAD software.
  • Proficiency in finite element analysis software, specifically Siemens FEMAP, and in basic structural and dynamic principles.
  • Strong understanding of structural mechanics, dynamics, and materials science principles relevant to aerospace applications.
  • Mechanical engineering computer-aided design modeling experience using SolidWorks or a similar tool.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities, including the ability to identify, assess, and resolve complex structural challenges and performance issues.
  • Ability to bound difficult problems through first principles and hand calculations.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to explain technical information clearly and concisely to engineers, managers, and customers.
  • Detail-oriented approach and commitment to quality, accuracy, and compliance in structural analysis and evaluation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a small team environment with little oversight.
