About The Position

In Virginia, Moffatt & Nichol is an established leader in providing engineering services for bridge design and rehabilitation with VDOT and major municipalities and counties across the state. We are actively looking for a Structural Engineer – Bridge Focus to join our Richmond office. As part of the Structural Group, the Structural Engineer will be self-motivated, committed to high-quality work performance, capable of being self-sufficient, must have excellent planning and communication skills, and the ability to work with other staff in a project team environment. This position will provide the ideal candidate with an opportunity to work on exciting projects and grow within the local and companywide structural team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline required.
  • 6 or more years of design experience of bridge or marine structures.
  • PE registration required.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) MathCAD and MicroStation (or AutoCAD) required.
  • Experience using: STAAD (required)
  • All new hires will be required to successfully complete and pass a pre-employment (post offer) background check in compliance with NIST 800-171.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering with structural emphasis preferred but not required.
  • Design experience in both bridge and marine structures a plus.
  • Prior experience of working on VDOT or other DOT projects preferred.
  • Experience using: SAP2000, CSiBridge, LARSA 4D, DESCUS, Bentley LEAP Bridge Suite (preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Develops plans, specifications, and inspection reports as needed.
  • Design of structures in the field of civil transportation including bridges, and other structures such as culverts, retaining walls and sound walls. Maintain quality control of the work product and effectively complete projects on time and within budget.
  • Helps resolve design problems that may include performing field investigation or inspections, detailed design work, and detailed checking of design computations done by others, or general coordination of specific design aspects into a project.
  • Calculates quantity and cost estimates.
  • May occasionally supervise and schedule work of other team members. Work and coordinate closely with other disciplines on multi-discipline projects.
  • Has limited direct client contact at staff level.
