Structural Drafter

Mill Creek Community Church•Fenton, MI

About The Position

Miller Industries (Flex Air) is seeking a Structural Drafter to join its structural engineering team. The role builds and maintains structural Revit models, coordinates them with mechanical, electrical, and architectural disciplines, and produces complete structural steel permit and construction drawing sets for prefabricated modular steel buildings. Projects include data center and industrial utility buildings, mechanical and electrical equipment enclosures, pump houses, and other industrial structures manufactured in-house and shipped to sites across the United States. The Structural Drafter works directly with structural engineers and the Engineer of Record (EOR), from initial layout through permitting and release to fabrication.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of structural drafting experience preparing structural steel permit or construction drawings.
  • Proficiency in Autodesk Revit for structural modeling and sheet production, and in AutoCAD.
  • Working knowledge of AISC shapes, connection types, and detailing practices, and AWS welding symbols.
  • Understanding of steel building fabrication and erection, including bolted and welded connections and anchorage to foundations.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering sketches, calculations, specifications, and vendor drawings.
  • Ability to prepare accurate drawings with minimal supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail and good communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 5 years of experience, including work with industrial buildings, modular steel structures, metal building systems, or data center projects.
  • Experience with Navisworks clash detection and multidisciplinary BIM coordination.
  • Familiarity with AISC 360, AISC 303 (Code of Standard Practice), ASCE/SEI 7, and the IBC as they apply to drawing content.
  • Experience with Bluebeam Revu, SolidWorks, or RISA-3D models.
  • Experience preparing steel fabrication or shop drawings and material lists.
  • Associate degree in drafting, CAD, or engineering technology.
  • ADDA, NISD, or Autodesk Certified Professional (Revit for Structural Design) certification.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain structural Revit models for framing, bracing, base frames, floors, roofs, platforms, stairs, and equipment support framing using engineering sketches, calculations, and markups.
  • Coordinate structural models with mechanical, piping, electrical, architectural, and equipment models.
  • Identify dimensional conflicts, missing information, and potential fabrication, shipping, or erection problems early, and bring practical solutions to the engineer.
  • Maintain Revit and AutoCAD templates, families, CAD standards, and the structural standard detail library.
  • Produce complete structural steel permit drawing sets, including general notes, design criteria, framing plans, elevations, sections, typical and connection details, base plate and anchor rod plans, and support reaction tables.
  • Show engineering-provided design criteria in general notes, including ASCE/SEI 7 risk category, wind, seismic, snow, and equipment loads.
  • Detail members, bolted and welded connections, and anchor rods using AISC shape designations and detailing conventions and AWS A2.4 weld symbols.
  • Prepare drawing packages for state modular and industrialized building program review, and revise drawings in response to engineering, plan review, and customer comments.
  • Manage revisions, issue logs, and transmittals, and maintain accurate drawing records in the company PLM system.
  • Hand off released models and drawings to the design and detailing team; prepare material lists and support shop or erection drawings as needed.
  • Answer drawing questions from fabrication and quality personnel on the shop floor.
