About The Position

ARCXIS is seeking a full-time Structural Designer to join its growing Houston office. The role produces structural designs and construction documents for residential buildings, often under tight time constraints. The preferred candidate has experience designing with steel, wood, and concrete; experience with mechanical systems and HVAC is a plus. The position offers an energetic team environment with potential for development and growth. The Structural Designer prepares and checks structural designs, evaluates gravity and lateral loads, and produces floor framing plans and foundation details. The role requires compliance with applicable codes, company standards, project requirements, and schedules, along with effective communication with internal departments, builders, architects, and other project stakeholders. It also includes reviewing and mentoring junior drafters/designers and completing quality checks.

Requirements

Minimum of 10 years of structural design experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Proficiency in CAD, including AutoCAD or BricsCAD and 2D drawings.
Excellent communication skills with internal and external customers.
Working knowledge of structural load calculations and applicable building codes.
Experience designing wood-framed structures, including conventional stick framing.
Strong written and verbal communication skills with internal teams and external customers.
Excellent organizational, time-management, and multitasking abilities, including the capacity to manage multiple projects while meeting deadlines.
High school education or equivalent.
Willingness to work overtime as business needs require.

Previous experience designing buildings with steel, wood, and concrete.

Trade school experience or CAD certification.

Responsibilities

Prepare structural designs and construction documents for assigned projects.
Identify design discrepancies and communicate required revisions to the Job Captain, builder, architect, or other project stakeholders.
Ensure structural designs comply with applicable codes, company standards, and project requirements.
Perform peer reviews and quality checks of other designers' work when assigned.
Maintain effective communication with internal departments and external customers throughout the design process.
Complete assigned projects accurately and within established project schedules.
Use QA Checklists to ensure quality plans are delivered to clients.
Calculate dead, live, roof, and snow loads in accordance with ASCE 7 and applicable building codes.
Determine tributary areas, load paths, and support reactions for beams, joists, columns, and foundations.
Use Forte Web to design engineered wood products, including I-joists, LVL beams, and rim boards for gravity loading conditions.
Interpret design inputs, evaluate span and bearing conditions, and verify software results using engineering judgment and applicable code requirements.
Calculate wind and seismic loads in accordance with ASCE 7 and local building code requirements.
Determine shear wall loads, diaphragm forces, overturning forces, and other lateral load path components.
Review junior drafters’ and designers’ work and provide feedback and redlines.
Produce floor framing plans and sections independently for low-to-mid complexity projects.
Run calculations using the PTI Slab Program.
Perform load transfer analysis from the superstructure to piers, considering soil bearing capacity.
Analyze soil-bearing capacity and determine appropriate conventional slab thickness and reinforcement.
Interpret and develop complex foundation details from the EIT/Engineer, including varying soil conditions, stepped footings, and deep foundation elements.
Ensure foundation drawings and coordination documents are constructible, code-compliant, and accurately communicated.
