About The Position

ARCXIS is seeking a full-time Structural Designer for its growing Houston office. The role produces structural designs and construction documents for residential buildings, with work involving gravity and lateral load analysis, floor systems, foundations, and structural details. The designer works with internal teams and external customers, identifies and communicates design discrepancies, ensures designs meet applicable codes and project requirements, and completes accurate work within project schedules. The position may also review and provide feedback on junior designers' work. The company describes an energetic team environment with potential for development and growth.

Requirements

At least 10 years of structural design experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Proficiency in CAD, including AutoCAD or BricsCAD and 2D drawings.
Excellent communication skills with internal and external customers.
Working knowledge of structural load calculations and applicable building codes.
Experience designing wood-framed structures, including conventional stick framing.
Strong written and verbal communication skills with internal teams and external customers.
Excellent organizational, time-management, and multitasking abilities, including the capacity to manage multiple projects while meeting deadlines.
High school education or equivalent.
Willingness to work overtime as business needs require.

Nice To Haves

Trade school experience or certification in CAD is preferred.
Prior experience designing buildings with steel, wood, and concrete is preferred.
Experience working with mechanical systems and HVAC is a plus.

Responsibilities

Prepare structural designs and construction documents for assigned projects.
Identify design discrepancies and communicate required revisions to the Job Captain, builder, architect, or other project stakeholders.
Ensure structural designs comply with applicable codes, company standards, and project requirements.
Perform peer reviews and quality checks of other designers' work when assigned.
Maintain effective communication with internal departments and external customers throughout the design process.
Complete assigned projects accurately and within established schedules.
Use QA checklists to ensure quality plans are delivered to clients.
Calculate dead, live, roof, and snow loads in accordance with ASCE 7 and applicable building codes.
Determine tributary areas, load paths, and support reactions for beams, joists, columns, and foundations.
Use Forte Web to design engineered wood products, including I-joists, LVL beams, and rim boards, for gravity loading conditions.
Interpret design inputs, evaluate span and bearing conditions, and verify software results using engineering judgment and applicable code requirements.
Calculate wind and seismic loads in accordance with ASCE 7 and local building code requirements.
Determine shear wall loads, diaphragm forces, overturning forces, and other lateral load path components.
Review junior drafters' and designers' work and provide feedback and redlines.
Apply drafting standards and design methods.
Independently produce floor framing plans and sections for low-to-mid complexity projects, with minimal oversight.
Run calculations using the PTI Slab Program.
Perform load transfer analysis from the superstructure to piers, considering soil bearing capacity.
Analyze soil-bearing capacity and determine appropriate slab thickness and reinforcement for conventional slabs.
Interpret and develop complex foundation details involving varying soil conditions, stepped footings, and deep foundation elements; ensure constructability, code compliance, and accurate communication in foundation drawings and coordination documents.
