Structural and Dynamic Systems Engineer - Analytical

Cummins•Seymour, IN
•$67,200 - $100,800

About The Position

This entry-level/early-career applied science position conducts numerical computations using third-party and in-house tools to evaluate the structural performance of components and systems. Computer-model results are used to assess whether designs meet customer requirements and to provide design recommendations as needed. The role is part of Cummins’ Analysis Led Design and Validation (ALDV) team in Seymour, Indiana, reporting to the US ALDV Team Manager. The team provides design recommendations to internal stakeholders through simulation and analysis, analytical hand calculations, and benchmarking. The engineer executes simulation-based evaluations, correlates system-level models with test data, and works with local stakeholders to define analysis tasks and suitable modeling techniques. The role considers model fidelity, product lifecycle timing, and the implications of simulation results. The position involves coordinating cross-functional simulation plans and project delivery to meet program schedules; leading analysis reviews for global internal customers; and developing and evaluating design iterations with stakeholders. The engineer uses CAD environments such as Creo to review and extract geometry and product information, contributes to functional excellence and continuous improvement, and provides technical mentoring to local engineers in simulation. The role independently executes established processes while developing product and technology knowledge, and may coordinate technicians or temporary student employees.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or an appropriate STEM field is required.
  • Mechanical Engineering is the stated educational program for this college job.
  • Entry-level/early-career professional; the U.S. Early Careers eligibility description specifies candidates within two years of completing their highest degree from an accredited U.S. college or university and currently residing in the continental U.S.
  • Must be able to meet any licensing requirements applicable to compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.
  • For F-1 visa students in U.S.-based roles, approved CPT or OPT related to the degree and authorized by the university is required before the early-career assignment begins.
  • Apply engineering principles including statics, dynamics, machine design, mechanics of materials, failure analysis, and engineering materials to design decisions based on numerical predictions.
  • Use or develop proficiency with simulation and analytical tools; the description references ANSYS, FE-Safe, GT, and AVL.
  • Execute simulation-based evaluations, correlate models with test data, and develop design recommendations using engineering judgment.
  • Work collaboratively with stakeholders and communicate analysis results and recommendations to internal customers.
  • Operate within CAD environments such as Creo to obtain geometry and product information.

Nice To Haves

  • Relevant experience in temporary student employment, such as an internship or co-op, extracurricular team activities, or as an early-career professional in a relevant technical discipline.
  • Experience with MS Office tools, MATLAB, Python, APDL-ANSYS, FORTRAN or C programming, Windows/Linux operating systems, and desktop or remote high-performance computing hardware systems.
  • A relevant post-graduate master’s degree may be required for select roles.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct numerical computations using third-party and in-house tools to determine the structural performance of components and systems.
  • Assess whether designs meet customer requirements and provide design recommendations based on model results.
  • Investigate product and system problems, identify causal mechanisms, recommend actions, own problem resolution, and document results.
  • Execute and improve established Engineering Standard Work and Design Validation Plan processes using standard and specialized computational tools and methods.
  • Obtain input from Design, Thermal Sciences, Materials, and Product Validation, and deliver computer models and results for structural performance parameters.
  • Determine component and system motion, vibration, natural frequencies, mode shapes, loads, stress, design margin, life, sound power, and related performance measures through numerical modeling and/or physical measurements.
  • Analyze technical data using statistical methods, including descriptive statistics, probability distributions, statistical inference, analysis of variance, regression, and design of experiments.
  • Execute simulation-based evaluations and provide component- and subsystem-level recommendations through hands-on analysis and collaboration with the ALDV team and broader organization.
  • Correlate system-level models with test data.
  • Work with local stakeholders to define analysis tasks and appropriate modeling techniques.
  • Select model fidelity appropriate to the product lifecycle stage and assess the impact of simulation results.
  • Manage cross-functional simulation plans and drive project execution and delivery to meet program schedules.
  • Lead analysis reviews, present results and conclusions, and recommend future actions to global internal customers.
  • Develop and evaluate design iterations with stakeholders using simulation results, product knowledge, and engineering judgment.
  • Use CAD environments such as Creo to access, review, and extract geometry and product information for analysis and design decisions.
  • Contribute to development projects, functional excellence, and continuous improvement of ALDV processes.
  • Provide technical mentoring to local engineers in simulation.
  • Coordinate and direct work among technicians and/or temporary student employees when applicable.
  • Communicate technical information and document knowledge to support productivity and knowledge transfer.
