About The Position

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is seeking a motivated and skilled Striping Crew Lead (Highway Maintenance Worker 3) to join their team in Yakima, WA. This leadership role involves overseeing a four-person striping crew responsible for pavement marking and striping operations throughout the South Central Region. The position combines hands-on fieldwork with crew leadership, coordinating daily operations, scheduling projects, mentoring team members, and ensuring work is completed efficiently, accurately, and in accordance with state and federal standards. The Striping Crew Lead will foster a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement in dynamic roadway environments, playing a vital role in maintaining the visibility and effectiveness of roadway markings that guide travelers. Through leadership and technical expertise, this role helps ensure Washington's transportation system remains safe, reliable, and accessible for the movement of people, goods, and services.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge and experience performing routine and emergency maintenance on highways, roadways, and related infrastructure including pavement repair, drainage systems, erosion control, vegetation management, sign and guardrail installation, and debris removal.
  • Ability to assess maintenance needs and perform repairs to highway structures, roadside features, and landscapes.
  • Skilled in operating and maintaining heavy equipment (e.g. front-end loaders, tractor mowers, sweepers, flushers, truck-mounted attenuators, backhoe, Vactor, 26,000 -56,000 GVW Dump truck with snowplow and chemical deicer attachments)
  • Proven ability to supervise personnel engaged in snow and ice removal operations, ensuring safe and effective performance in adverse weather conditions during both day and nighttime hours.
  • Possession of a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with N endorsement without airbrakes restriction, Valid CDL Medical card.
  • Washington State Flagging Card (or ability to obtain within six (6) months of appointment), First Aid Certification (or ability to obtain within six (6) months of appointment).
  • Strong understanding of workplace safety procedures and commitment to following safety policies, including confined space entry, fall protection, and hazardous material handling.
  • Ability to participate in the creation and implementation of Pre Activity Safety Plans (PASP) and attend regular safety training.
  • Ability to use electronic systems for timekeeping, maintenance tracking, inventory management, and cost estimating.
  • Proficient in standard computer applications including Microsoft Office and email communication.
  • Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of snow and ice control plans with the ability to interpret, apply, and lead crews in implementing winter maintenance procedures.
  • Ability to make operational decisions in dynamic conditions to ensure safe and effective winter roadway operations.
  • Proficiency in interpreting and applying the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and related work zone traffic control standards.
  • Ability to establish, implement, and monitor safe traffic control setups to protect workers and the traveling public in active roadway environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to safely operate a wide range of highway maintenance equipment to support roadway, winter, and emergency maintenance operations.
  • Ability to adapt equipment use to varying field conditions and operational needs while maintaining safety and efficiency standards.

Responsibilities

  • Establish, implement, and maintain pavement marking and striping operations for all South Central Region (SCR) work activities.
  • Lead and ensure the layout, application, and removal of temporary and permanent pavement markings for lane lines, edge lines, crosswalks, symbols, legends, and other roadway delineation on two-lane and multi-lane highways.
  • Operate and maintain striping equipment and vehicles, including paint trucks, thermoplastic applicators, bead dispensers, grinders, and support vehicles.
  • Ensure proper calibration, material handling, and equipment setup to achieve accurate, durable, and high-visibility markings.
  • Perform both mobile and stationary striping operations while working in active traffic environments, utilizing appropriate traffic control measures to protect crew members and the traveling public.
  • Support emergency and priority response activities by installing temporary pavement markings, removing damaged markings, or modifying existing striping patterns to accommodate traffic revisions, construction activities, or roadway incidents.
  • Perform snow and ice control operations from assigned WSDOT Maintenance Facilities during the winter season.
  • Respond to emergencies, on-call, and after-hours events such as severe weather, roadway incidents, closures, and other unplanned maintenance needs.
  • Transport, move, and manipulate various types of equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Work in all weather conditions, including some night shifts and long hours.
  • Occasional standby and call-back duties may be necessary, and rotational night shifts are a requirement for the position.
