About The Position

The Streets Maintenance Worker is an entry-level position serving under close supervision of the Street Supervisor. Individuals learn general street maintenance practices and City procedures. The employee is expected to exercise independent judgment in the field and at all times. As experience is gained and proficiency is demonstrated, individuals may advance to a higher skill level within the division. The primary purpose of this position is to perform routine skilled manual work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of streets, storm drains, sidewalks and related public works facilities; removal of snow, painting of traffic markings; and the operation of light equipment. The Street Maintenance Worker must also work with residents and members of the public in a courteous and respectful manner. This includes receiving complaints about schedules and levels or quality of service, which should be noted and reported to their immediate supervisor.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
  • A valid, current driver's license.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.
  • Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, and distance.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to operate equipment and machinery requiring complex and rapid adjustments, such as trucks and other equipment.
  • Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet and limbs in performing movements requiring low to moderate skill.
  • The employee is occasionally required to talk and listen.
  • Ability to exert moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of frequent standing, walking, using stairs, sitting, climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pushing, and pulling.
  • The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Responsibilities

  • Cleans and removes debris from streets, gutters, storm drains, catch basins, drainage ditches, sidewalks, and street construction sites by shoveling, raking, sweeping, and picking up debris.
  • Breaks up pavements, digs holes, cuts trenches, excavates, and fills in holes in streets and other paved surfaces, using sledge hammer, shovel, pick, spade, rake, hoe, hand tools or jackhammer; patches and paves streets and other paved surfaces.
  • Loads, transports, and unloads construction equipment, materials, debris, and other heavy objects related to street maintenance, using appropriately sized vehicle and/or tractor with a mower, loader, or forklift.
  • Builds forms and prepares surfaces for paving, patching, or repair/reconstruction of streets, curbs, and similar public works facilities.
  • Installs, repairs, and replaces storm drain pipes, street signs, traffic markers, street benches, end barriers, guard rails, or other related objects.
  • Operates asphalt rake, power roller, and hand tools; mixing, applying, leveling, or otherwise finishing concrete, asphalt or other such material to repair, replace, or reconstruct broken pavement.
  • Performs asphalt paving and road reconstruction along with storm sewer inlet and curb & gutter repair.
  • Assists with painting of traffic markings on streets, crosswalks, parking lots, or curbs; using stencils, legends, striping, and taping equipment.
  • Fabricates, installs, and repairs traffic/street signs and removes those no longer needed.
  • Designs and fabricates special signs for municipal facilities, as needed.
  • Operates small, medium, and heavy equipment and vehicles as assigned.
  • Sets up traffic control, including signs and barricades, and directs traffic around work sites.
  • Performs work not specifically related to the operation, such as moving heavy equipment or materials, various grounds work including grass cutting, snow removal and general housekeeping.
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance on equipment as necessary.
  • May remove dead animals from rights of way as necessary.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
  • Assesses condition of infrastructure, prepares reports and recommends improvements.
  • Expected to be available for call-out in emergencies and available for work on weekends and holidays.
  • Must acquire and maintain any special licensing and certification needed to perform duties properly.
  • Assist other departments on an as needed basis.
  • Assists in repairs and operations in the absence of normally assigned personnel as necessary.
  • Responds to public works emergencies and natural disasters as necessary.
