About The Position

Performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled repairs and maintenance work, capable of operating a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of City water, sewer, streets, City services and systems, and parks maintenance in a drug and alcohol-free environment. This position requires the ability and willingness to perform continuous, hands-on physical labor outdoors in all weather conditions. Individuals in this role should possess existing skills and experience in various craft, skills, and technical abilities, bringing additional specialized skills to enhance their value. They should be self-starters, motivated, work well in a team, and take initiative or seek direction from their supervisor to ensure productivity. All Public Works department employees are considered ambassadors for the City, working towards the common goal of providing quality municipal services with pride and professionalism. Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Good (1 to 3 years) experience relating to construction, maintenance, or repair.
  • Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License.
  • Considerable knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods, and procedures used in maintenance, construction, and repair activities.
  • Skill in operation of some of the listed tools and equipment.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to work safely and carry out safety procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally, in writing, and computer skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with employees, other departments, and the public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, and the public.
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Must obtain a valid state driver’s license at the time of hire date.
  • Ability to obtain a CDL certification.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with the planning, scheduling, and implementation of construction, maintenance, and operation activities for water, sewer, street, and drainage services.
  • Inspects and/or repairs chlorine injection equipment, booster pumping stations, reservoirs, meters, streets, drainage systems, and sewer systems.
  • Maintains records related to inspections, maintenance activities, water supply, and consumption.
  • Determines utility line locations (gas, telephone, power, cable, water, sewer) using the blue stake process before excavation.
  • Responds to resident complaints regarding water issues, evaluates the situation, and explains findings to the supervisor.
  • Contacts residents and business owners to inform them about service discontinuations and restoration timelines.
  • Mows and maintains parks and open space areas, including lawns, weeding, and sprinkler system maintenance and repair.
  • Maintains trails and improvements.
  • Inspects, washes, and performs routine maintenance on drinking fountains and restrooms.
  • Sweeps, washes, paints, and repairs or replaces outdoor tables and slabs.
  • Performs minor unskilled or semi-skilled maintenance on open space structures (restrooms, shelters, sheds) including custodial, painting, plumbing, and carpentry work.
  • Performs routine maintenance on lawn and power equipment.
  • Plants lawns, trees, shrubs, and flowers.
  • Conducts seeding, fertilizing, top dressing, soil conditioning, watering, and pest/weed control in parks and open spaces.
  • Maintains and adjusts specialized turf care equipment and tools (electric motors, pumps, sprinklers, tractors, mowers, irrigation systems).
  • Operates tractors, mowers, jack hammers, welders, trucks, steam cleaners, buffers, washers, and other equipment as needed.
  • Maintains current knowledge in proper and safe techniques for building and grounds maintenance.
  • Collects and disposes of solid waste and litter from buildings and grounds.
  • Assists in setting up and taking down equipment for various functions and programs, and prepares facilities for use.
  • Assists in the construction of new open space facilities, including clearing, grading, drainage, and foundation work.
  • Ensures proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking them after use.
  • Drives trucks of various sizes for loading, hauling, and unloading equipment, gravel, and sand.
  • Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment, reporting defects or needed repairs to the supervisor.
  • Operates light and medium-sized construction and power equipment (mechanized broom, jetter/inductor truck, backhoe/loader).
  • Performs all duties in conformance with appropriate safety and security standards.
  • Performs labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including pavement cutting, ditch digging, manhole and line cleaning, main and pipe repair, laying, and backfilling.
  • Cuts, fits, lays, repairs, taps, cleans, and flushes water mains, pipe, gates, and fittings; assists in shutting off broken water mains.
  • Services water supply, sewer lift, and other pumps.
  • Operates a variety of power construction and maintenance equipment used in the water, sewer, streets, and parks departments.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Scheduled for On-Call hours on a rotational basis for emergencies or events.
