About The Position

The City of Saint Charles Public Works Department is recruiting a full-time, non-exempt Field Maintenance Worker – Streets. The position performs assigned skilled construction work to maintain and repair public infrastructure, including roadways and storm and sanitary sewer systems, and supports snow and ice removal operations. The worker inspects, maintains, loads and unloads, drives, and operates construction vehicles and equipment used in Public Works maintenance, repair, and snow removal. Duties also include maintaining and repairing street signs and posts, repairing or replacing damaged asphalt and concrete roads and sidewalks, following safety procedures, and responding to public inquiries and complaints. The role may also perform Street Maintenance, Sewer Maintenance, and Water Distribution Worker duties. Mandatory attendance and participation are required for a rotating on-call schedule, assigned overtime, civil emergencies, severe weather events such as flooding and snow removal, special events, and call-outs. Work is performed outdoors in varied field conditions and involves strenuous physical labor, heavy lifting, equipment operation, confined space entry, and exposure to extreme temperatures, inclement weather, noise, and airborne irritants.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Two years of experience related to general construction, maintenance and repair, and equipment operation, or an equivalent combination of education and experience providing equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Valid Missouri driver's license.
Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with air brakes and tanker endorsements required as a condition of employment and continued employment.
Ability to lift and carry materials weighing 100+ pounds and assist with heavier loads; transport objects weighing 100+ pounds up to 100 feet.
Ability to perform strenuous and sustained manual labor, including digging, raking, and shoveling, and operate heavy hand tools.
Ability to bend, stoop, crouch, kneel, crawl, perform overhead work, climb ladders or steps, maintain balance on uneven surfaces, and enter confined spaces.
Ability to work outdoors in extreme heat and cold, inclement weather, and varied field conditions, and tolerate exposure to dust, pollen, fumes, and high noise levels; hearing protection is required.
Ability to use visual, hearing, motor, judgment, and situational-awareness skills to safely perform field work and operate equipment.

Responsibilities

Inspect, maintain, load and unload, drive, and operate construction vehicles and equipment, hand tools, and power tools used in Public Works maintenance, repair, and snow removal.
Perform routine maintenance and repairs to install or replace sign posts and street signs.
Repair or replace cracked or damaged sections of asphalt or concrete roads and sidewalks.
Follow appropriate safety standards, procedures, and equipment requirements.
Participate in the rotating on-call schedule, assigned overtime, civil emergencies, severe weather events, flooding and snow removal operations, special events, and call-outs.
Respond to public inquiries and complaints.
Perform duties of Street Maintenance, Sewer Maintenance, and Water Distribution Worker.
