About The Position

The City of Soldotna has an immediate opening for a Streets & Maintenance Operator/Worker. To apply, complete the City's online application and attach a cover letter and resume. Under the direct supervision of the Streets & Maintenance Department Manager, this position performs tasks related to the operation and maintenance of the City including; streets, storm drainage systems, parks, public buildings, the Soldotna Municipal Airport, sewer collection system, water supply storage and distribution systems, and other miscellaneous work as assigned. Work may be assigned on a shift basis. The position involves contact with the supervisor, fellow employees, contractors, and the public.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Five years of experience related to the essential job functions.
  • Alaska Commercial Driver's License (Class A or B with airbrake and tanker validation and current medical examiners certification) for operation of vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Must have and maintain a good driving record.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers.
  • Ability to communicate pertinent information in writing.
  • General knowledge of the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment, building and grounds maintenance.
  • General knowledge of carpentry, basic electrical, plumbing and mechanical systems, particularly as they relate to buildings.
  • General knowledge of trade safety and special requirement needs such as the use of personal protective equipment and confined space entry requirements.
  • Ability to operate hand tools and hand power equipment.
  • Ability to proficiently operate light and heavy equipment and perform light maintenance on equipment.
  • Ability to work back-to-back extended workdays, including the operation of heavy equipment for periods up to 14 hours in a single day.
  • Ability to work safely in a variety of different situations and conditions.
  • Ability to maintain required licenses without restriction (except for correctable vision).

Responsibilities

  • Perform regular and recurring tasks related to the operation and maintenance of City streets, storm drainage systems, public buildings, the Soldotna Municipal Airport, parks, sewer collection systems, and the water supply, storage, and distribution system.
  • Perform light maintenance on all equipment operated.
  • Perform manual labor tasks such as thawing storm drain inlets and culverts, digging holes, building shelving, painting, etc.
  • Be available on-call to perform unscheduled or emergency needs of the City.
  • Performs other activities as directed by the Maintenance Department Manager.
