About The Position

The City of Topeka’s Street division is seeking a hard-working individual to perform manual labor maintaining street surfaces, curbs and gutters, and supporting snow and ice control. This entry-level position includes field training to help trainees gain skills for advancement. The City provides training, study time, and equipment, on paid time, to help the trainee obtain a Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL), which must be obtained by the end of the six-month initial-hire probationary period. The position provides steady, year-round employment. It is considered essential, and incumbents must be available for after-hours snow and ice removal and other emergency work as needed. The position starts at $19.97 per hour, increasing to $20.43 per hour after successful completion of the six-month probationary period.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
Possess and maintain a valid Class C Kansas driver’s license and a city-insurable driving record.
Be at least 18 years old at the time of hire.
Obtain a Class A commercial driver’s license by the conclusion of the six-month initial-hire probationary period.

Responsibilities

Perform manual labor in the maintenance of street surfaces, curbs, and gutters.
Perform pick-and-shovel work, asphalt patching, crack sealing, concrete placement, and rock spreading.
Transport construction materials.
Operate snow and ice removal equipment.
Be available for after-hours snow and ice removal and other emergency work as needed.
Obtain a Class A commercial driver’s license by the conclusion of the six-month initial-hire probationary period.
