About The Position

The Streets Maintenance Technician I performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of Town streets and related infrastructure within the Public Services Department. Work includes tasks such as concrete and asphalt work, drainage maintenance, landscaping, flagging traffic, assisting with minor equipment repairs, and supporting Town-sponsored special events. Employees in this class work both independently and as part of a crew, often in outdoor environments and in varying weather conditions. Responsibilities include assisting with the setup and breakdown of special events by installing and removing barricades, barriers, traffic control devices, temporary signage, and other safety equipment. The position also supports crowd control and pedestrian safety efforts during festivals, parades, community events, and other public gatherings to help ensure the safe and orderly movement of vehicles and pedestrians. This role supports the safe and effective upkeep of streets, sidewalks, and storm drainage systems and plays a key part in snow and ice control operations. Work requires following detailed instructions, using hand tools and light equipment, maintaining safety standards at all times, and supporting special event operations as assigned. This position is regularly scheduled to work Friday through Monday and supports weekend operations and special events as needed.

Requirements

High School Diploma or GED
Six (6) months of related experience in construction, maintenance, or manual labor; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
Possession of a valid North Carolina Driver’s License

Responsibilities

Perform semi-skilled and unskilled tasks in maintaining and repairing Town streets, sidewalks, and storm drainage systems
Prepare asphalt materials for resurfacing and patching
Assist with laying, pouring, and finishing concrete
Hand grade streets, ditches, and construction areas
Clean storm drains, culverts, and catch basins
Perform mowing, trimming, and general landscaping around work sites
Heat and maintain proper temperature on tar kettle
Set up safety cones, signs, and flag traffic around work zones
Install, maintain, and remove barricades, barriers, temporary signage, and traffic control devices for street projects and special events
Assist with crowd control and pedestrian safety measures during festivals, parades, community events, and other public gatherings
Assist with the setup and breakdown of Town-sponsored special events
Operate asphalt roller, air hammer, and other light-to-medium equipment
Assist with minor repair of equipment and tools
Remove snow from sidewalks and designated areas
Perform other related duties as assigned
