The Street Maintenance Specialist is a skilled position responsible for operation of a variety of equipment in the maintenance and repair, replacement, and construction of Village infrastructure, including stormwater, streets, grounds, vacant lots and parks. Employees in this classification report to the Streets Superintendent. This position acts as lead to street maintenance crews, part-time staff, contractors or temporary workers as required and assigned. Assigns and delegates work instructions and directions to staff; directs subordinate personnel in regard to departmental tasks and Village policies and procedures. Performs skilled operation of various trucks and light to medium equipment; e.g., tractors, large mowers, grounds maintenance equipment, etc. Operates equipment for excavation, construction and maintenance purposes; e.g., ditches, roads, streets, grounds, parks and construction. Operates various trucks and equipment in the loading, hauling, and transfer of refuse, materials, and supplies. Performs routine cleaning, inspection and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment and reports defects, maintenance and/or repair needs to appropriate staff for resolution. Applies proper traffic direction techniques to ensure safety of operators and operation of equipment. Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals. Trains other staff and provides supervision on project-specific tasks when needed. Serves as team leader in the general maintenance of Village infrastructure. Coordinate work with crew/subcontractor to maintain production schedule and meet deadlines. Monitors, supervises, and schedules services performed by outside contractors when necessary. Verifies invoice costs. Ensures projects, renovations, and preventative maintenance programs are completed on schedule as directed. Inspects and assists with repairs to catch basins, outfalls, junction boxes, yard inlets, detention/retention ponds, illicit discharges, and other stormwater structures. Evaluates the status of mechanical equipment and vehicles, and performs or schedules needed repairs. Hauls, transports, loads and unloads various equipment and materials used in projects or at work sites. Performs general/preventive maintenance tasks necessary to keep vehicles, equipment and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, refueling vehicles, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, replacing parts, washing/cleaning equipment, and cleaning shop/work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment. Operate a 2-way radio using designated call signals and codes in order to maintain communication between routes and report emergencies or unusual conditions to work crews, supervisor, facilities, and operations. Maintains records, prepares reports and other specialized maintenance records of equipment and mechanical equipment. Performs duties as assigned during emergency response conditions. Communicates with supervisor, employees, community service workers, other departments, contractors, community organizations, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems. May require being on-call.
