Street Maintenance Worker
About The Position
Under basic supervision, the Streets Maintenance Worker performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance work and operates a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of City street and storm drainage facilities and systems. This position is a tentative “At-Will” appointment and subject to a probationary period of six (6) months from the date of hire. Upon successful completion of a probationary period, a non-management employee shall be granted regular status in the classification in which the probationary period is served.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent AND three (3) years of experience relating to the maintenance and repair of streets, curbs, and gutters; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Must possess a valid Arizona driver’s license.
- Knowledge of applicable local, State, and Federal laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances.
- Knowledge of materials, methods, and techniques used in the construction and maintenance of streets.
- Knowledge of work safety policies, procedures, practices, and equipment.
- Knowledge of records maintenance policies and procedures.
- Skill in caring for and using tools and equipment used in installing and maintaining streets.
- Skill in following written and verbal instructions.
- Skill in maintaining accurate records and logs.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
- Skill in communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.

- An Inmate Supervision certification may be required.
Responsibilities
- Maintains and repairs curbs, sidewalks, gutters, and water boxes; cuts and patches asphalt; seals cracks.
- Paints school zones, curbs, and crosswalks; covers graffiti.
- Maintains and replaces signs and poles as needed; may participate in street sign fabrication.
- Participates in City park beautification and maintenance; mows grass, prunes plants, and cuts weeds; replaces park and streetlights.
- Maintains ditches and alleyways; removes weeds and brush.
- Inspects and repairs streets and drainage systems at frequent intervals to ensure that all aspects of the systems are functioning properly.
- Drives trucks of various sizes and weights; participates in loading, hauling, and unloading of various equipment, gravel, and sand.
- Ensures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use.
- Conducts traffic control duties at work sites and for emergencies and special events.
- Performs routine inspection and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisors; cleans equipment.
- Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards; maintains a variety of records relating to inspections, maintenance activity, and street signage.
- Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects.
- Performs related duties as assigned or required.
