Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Five years of experience in public street maintenance.
  • Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brakes and tanker endorsements.
  • Ability to complete the essential duties and responsibilities of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Ability to operate and maintain various equipment used in street maintenance and have understanding of necessary and required maintenance of equipment.
  • Knowledge of street construction and maintenance practices.
  • Maintain ability to perform safety sensitive functions, as defined by state statute.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree in public works maintenance operations.
  • Previous field supervisor or crew lead, or similar supervisory experience.
  • Seven years of experience in public street maintenance.
  • Completed public works certificate, APWA leadership program, or similar program.
  • LTAP road scholar certificate.
  • Experience working with an asset management software program.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and direct the day-to-day operations, including staff, equipment, and supplies assigned to the Street Maintenance division to ensure projects are completed efficiently, accurately, and conform to city standards.
  • Provide field supervision of Streets Maintenance Workers, including prioritizing and directing job assignments, overseeing equipment usage, and ensuring adherence to all safety procedures.
  • Knowledge and ability to perform all the duties included in the Street Maintenance Worker job description.
  • Perform the responsibilities of a Street Maintenance Worker, including but not limited to, pothole patching, cut-outs, paving, mill and overlay, protecting the work site/directing traffic, performing forestry tasks, repairing and maintaining traffic signs, pavement markers, streetlights, and traffic signals, and continuing maintenance of City streets, parking lots, trails, and alleys.
  • Ensure clear and safe winter streets by plowing, distributing winter chemicals, shoveling, and snow-blowing City streets, and properties.
  • Assist crews as necessary to ensure all aspects of daily operations are functioning properly.
  • Willing and qualified to perform physical work tasks and operate department equipment as necessary.
  • Assist with administrative functions, including planning annual division projects, ordering materials, supplies, and tools to complete necessary assignments, and providing purchase recommendations and budget input to the Superintendent.
  • Recommend revisions in work procedures, personnel training, and equipment to facilitate improvements in achieving department objectives.
  • Assist in the maintenance of accurate records of activities undertaken, work accomplished, employee hours, equipment and materials utilized, and issues encountered.
  • Respond to emergency situations as required.
  • Evaluate and coordinate the appropriate response to emergency situations.
  • Ensure availability during off-duty hours.
  • Investigate complaints related to City streets and right of way and provide responses to community member inquiries and requests.
  • Assist the Superintendent with training, development, and performance management of Street Maintenance Workers.
  • Undertake the planning and training of full and part-time employees with respect to equipment operation, safety requirements, and work procedures.
  • Provides onboarding and training for new staff.
  • Assist with employee performance reviews.
