Strategy & Operations Associate

MATTER•Chicago, IL
•$55,000 - $60,000•Onsite

About The Position

MATTER is looking for a sharp, driven strategy & operations associate to help us run the business behind our mission. This is an early-career role for someone who wants a front-row seat to how a healthcare innovation organization operates and wants to build the skills for a future in a strategy, operations or chief of staff role. The successful candidate will be a resourceful utility player with a "yes, please" attitude who likes solving problems, gets energy from variety and is comfortable figuring things out when the path isn't fully mapped. As strategy & operations associate, you will report to the chief of staff and work across nearly every part of the office of the CEO, with a focus on operations, finance and special projects. On operations, you will help keep the organization's processes, meetings and projects moving forward. On finance, you will own our accounts payable workflow and support budgeting, forecasting and monthly financial reporting. On special projects, you will act as an in-house consultant: digging into problems, building analyses and turning findings into clear recommendations. You will draft presentations for team meetings and the board of directors, and you will regularly work alongside MATTER's leadership team. You'll learn quickly, and we'll give you the chance to grow as fast as you're ready to.

Requirements

  • You are a trusted partner who is like a vault for confidential information.
  • You are a hardworking utility player. No task is too big or too small, and you raise your hand to help.
  • You are a PowerPoint whiz. You can take a messy set of ideas and turn it into a clean, persuasive story.
  • You are strong in Excel. You're comfortable writing formulas, building pivot tables and organizing data so others can use it.
  • You are curious about finance and interested in learning the basics of accounting and financial operations.
  • You are comfortable with ambiguity. When directions are incomplete, you ask good questions, make a plan, and get moving.
  • You are confident working with executives and senior leaders, even when they have far more experience than you.
  • You are a clear communicator in both written and oral form, and you welcome feedback as a way to get better quickly.
  • You are passionate about MATTER's mission and care about the team.
  • 0–2 years of professional experience, including internships.
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Interest in healthcare required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in consulting, operations, finance or a startup environment is a plus.
  • Familiarity with accounting or AP tools (such as QuickBooks Online or Bill.com) is a plus but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Own MATTER's accounts payable workflow, including entering and coding bills, routing approvals and keeping vendor records organized and up to date.
  • Support the annual budget, reforecasts and monthly financial reviews by pulling data, building reports and flagging variances.
  • Create first drafts of team decks, board of directors materials and committee presentations, turning rough ideas and data into polished, compelling slides.
  • Build Excel models and analyses to answer business questions, using formulas, pivot tables and whatever else the problem calls for.
  • Get in the weeds with the Chief of Staff on problem solving: research options, structure the problem and bring forward recommendations.
  • Help plan key meetings, prepare materials, capture notes and action items, and follow up on deliverables.
  • Support the OKR process by tracking progress and preparing monthly and quarterly updates.
  • Take on special projects across operations, HR administration and partnerships as priorities shift.
  • Help improve how we work by documenting processes and finding ways to make them simpler and more efficient.

Benefits

  • Choice of numerous medical, dental and vision insurance plan options
  • Opportunity to participate in a 403(b) and contribute to FSA plans for tax-free support of medical, child care and transit expenses
  • Monthly cell phone stipend that is not taxed
  • Unlimited paid time off, because we believe that time devoted to yourself and those in your life is fundamental to good health
  • Annual company-wide winter break between Christmas and New Year's
  • Build an extensive professional network across the healthcare and entrepreneurial ecosystems
  • Engage with some of the most innovative thinkers in healthcare innovation
  • Grow your skills and knowledge with continuous learning, including dedicated company-wide time to learning each month and periodic workshops for our team
  • Work with a diverse team that is passionate about our work and cares about each other
  • Own your work as part of our small, dynamic team, with unbounded opportunities to stretch, learn and lead
  • Be hands-on and part of building an exciting and mission-driven organization
