About The Position

The University of Virginia Athletics Department is seeking Strategic Marketing & Fan Engagement Interns to assist in creating memorable game-day experiences and driving attendance across UVA's 27 varsity sports programs. Interns will gain hands-on experience in sports marketing, event operations, fan engagement, and sponsorship activation while working alongside full-time athletics staff. UVA Athletics has won more than 35 NCAA Division I National Championships and welcomes thousands of fans to athletic events each year. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to one of the nation's premier collegiate athletics programs.

Requirements

  • Resume and Cover Letter required.
  • Full-time student currently enrolled at the University of Virginia (graduate and undergraduate).
  • Availability to attend all home football games and select competitions for other sports, which are frequently scheduled during evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to represent the University of Virginia and UVA Athletics in a positive, professional, and customer-service-oriented manner.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to multitask, problem-solve, and adapt in a fast-paced live event environment.
  • Dependable, punctual, and able to work both independently and as part of a team.

Nice To Haves

  • Genuine interest in pursuing a career in sports marketing, fan engagement, event management, or collegiate athletics.
  • Previous experience in customer service, event operations, marketing, promotions, or athletics.
  • Creative mindset with a willingness to contribute new ideas for fan engagement and game presentation.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and current fan engagement trends.

Responsibilities

  • Execute game-day promotions, giveaways, contests, and fan engagement activities.
  • Assist with sponsorship activations and in-venue entertainment elements.
  • Support event setup, breakdown, and operational logistics.
  • Interact with fans to create a welcoming and engaging game-day atmosphere.
  • Assist with special events, student outreach initiatives, and community engagement opportunities.
  • Support the Sabre Rewards program and student attendance efforts.
  • Help develop and implement marketing plans designed to increase attendance and enhance the fan experience.
  • Create game scripts, run-of-show documents, and event timelines.
  • Brainstorm and develop creative content, promotional concepts, and fan engagement features.
  • Collaborate with athletics staff, student groups, spirit squads, and campus partners to promote events and drive attendance.
