About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The role is intended to provide interactive development for an external candidate for the Store Manager position and is held for a limited period. The candidate may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence and helps maintain customer service, store presentation, inventory availability, financial integrity, safety, and compliance with company procedures. The role involves frequent physical activity and some travel, with limited overnight stays.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash handling procedures, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including report generation.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal skills.
Effective organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations where limited standardization exists.
Frequent walking and standing, bending, stooping, and kneeling; frequent handling of merchandise and equipment; frequent lifting of up to 40 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 55 pounds; occasional ladder climbing.
Occasional driving or providing own transportation for bank deposits, management meetings, and visits to other stores.
Must be 21 years of age or older, as stated in the job title.
High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred.
One year of retail experience preferred for external candidates.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities, including recruiting, hiring, and training qualified applicants.
Assist with merchandising, staging, stocking, and storing merchandise, and ensure merchandise is presented, signed, and priced according to established practices and management direction.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide customer service leadership and demonstrate responsiveness to customer needs.
Follow company procedures and policies and serve as a role model for employees.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are safely deposited in the designated bank.
Help maintain the store’s financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements to identify business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Act as a liaison between the Store Support Center and store employees and foster cooperation and collaboration.
Maintain an open forum for employee exchange and provide continuous attention to staff development.
Ensure store compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
Travel as needed to make bank deposits, attend management meetings, and visit other Dollar General stores.
