About The Position
The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The role is intended to develop an external candidate for a Store Manager position and is held for a limited period. The candidate helps manage store operations and may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence. The position requires some travel, with limited overnight stays, and may involve occasional driving or providing personal transportation for bank deposits, management meetings, or visits to other Dollar General stores.
Requirements
- Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
- Knowledge of cash handling, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
- Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including generating reports.
- Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
- Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
- Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Effective interpersonal and organizational skills, with attention to detail.
- Ability to solve problems and handle situations with limited standardization.
- Frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, and handling merchandise and equipment.
- Frequent lifting of up to 40 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 55 pounds.
- Occasional ladder climbing.
- Occasional driving or providing personal transportation for business-related activities.
- Ability to travel, with limited overnight stays.
Nice To Haves
- High school diploma or equivalent is strongly preferred.
- One year of retail experience is preferred for external candidates.
- Bilingual Spanish speakers may be preferred at certain store locations.
Responsibilities
- Assist with recruiting and staffing activities, including recruiting, hiring, and training qualified applicants.
- Assist with merchandising, staging, stocking, storing, signing, and pricing merchandise according to established practices and Store Manager direction.
- Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
- Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
- Provide customer service leadership and respond sensitively to customer needs.
- Model compliance with company procedures and policies.
- Participate in store opening and closing activities.
- Ensure company funds are safely deposited in the designated bank.
- Help maintain financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash control procedures.
- Help maintain a clean, well-stocked, and safe store for customers and employees.
- Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
- Review operating statements to identify business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
- Complete required paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
- Support staff development and foster cooperation and collaboration among employees.
- Act as a liaison between the Store Support Center and store employees.
- Ensure store compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
