About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The position is intended to develop an external candidate for a Store Manager role and is held for a limited period. The candidate may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence and helps maintain customer service, merchandising, inventory, financial controls, store safety, and compliance with company procedures. The role involves frequent physical activity and some travel, including occasional overnight stays.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash handling procedures, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including report generation.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal skills.
Effective organization skills and attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations with limited standardization.
Frequent walking and standing; frequent bending, stooping, and kneeling.
Frequent handling of merchandise and equipment, including hand-held scanners, pricing guns, box cutters, merchandise containers, carts, two-wheel dollies, and U-boats.
Frequent lifting of up to 40 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 55 pounds.
Occasional climbing using a ladder.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with moderate noise and occasional exposure to outside weather conditions.
Some travel, with limited overnight stays.
High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred.
For external candidates, one year of retail experience preferred.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities.
Support store merchandising, including staging, stocking, storing, signing, and pricing merchandise in accordance with established practices and Store Manager direction.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide customer service leadership and demonstrate company procedures and policies.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are deposited at the designated bank.
Support the store’s financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash control procedures.
Help maintain a clean, well-stocked, and safe store for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements to identify business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Develop staff and recruit, hire, and train qualified applicants.
Ensure store compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
Act as a liaison between the Store Support Center and store employees and foster cooperation and collaboration.
Occasionally drive or provide own transportation for bank deposits, management meetings, and visits to other Dollar General stores.
