About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The position is intended to develop an external candidate for a Store Manager role and is held for a limited period. The candidate assists with recruiting and staffing, merchandising, inventory management, ordering, customer service, store opening and closing, cash controls, store maintenance, and documentation. They may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence and review operating statements for business trends and opportunities to control expenses, shrink, and errors. The role involves frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, and handling merchandise and equipment. It requires frequent lifting of up to 40 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 55 pounds, occasional ladder use, and occasional driving or providing personal transportation for bank deposits, meetings, or visits to other Dollar General stores. Some travel with limited overnight stays is required. The environment is fast-paced with moderate noise, and occasional exposure to outside weather conditions.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash handling, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including generating reports.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal and organizational skills, with attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations where limited standardization exists.
Ability to communicate tactfully and directly with employees and maintain an open forum for exchange.
Frequent lifting of up to 40 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 55 pounds.
Occasional climbing using a ladder.
Occasional driving or providing own transportation for work-related duties.
Ability to travel, including limited overnight stays.

Nice To Haves

High school diploma or equivalent is strongly preferred.
One year of experience in a retail environment is preferred for external candidates.
Bilingual Spanish speakers may be preferred at certain store locations.

Responsibilities

Assist in recruiting and staffing activities.
Assist with merchandising, including staging, stocking, storage, presentation, and proper use of fixtures, signs, and pricing.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide customer service leadership and respond to customer needs.
Model compliance with company procedures and policies.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are safely deposited in the designated bank.
Support the financial integrity of the store through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash control procedures.
Help maintain a clean, well-stocked, and safe store for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements to identify business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Support staff development and foster cooperation and collaboration.
Recruit, hire, and train qualified applicants to fulfill store needs.
Help ensure compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
Occasionally drive or provide personal transportation for bank deposits, management meetings, and visits to other Dollar General stores.
