About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The position is intended to provide interactive development for an external candidate preparing for a Store Manager role and is held for a limited period. The role may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence and act as a liaison between the Store Support Center and store employees. It requires supporting staff development, customer service, store compliance, and the effective operation of store activities. Some travel is required, with limited overnight stays.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash-handling procedures, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including report generation.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal and organizational skills, with attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations with limited standardization.
High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred.
One year of experience in a retail environment preferred for external candidates.
Frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, and handling merchandise and equipment.
Ability to frequently lift up to 40 pounds and occasionally lift up to 55 pounds.
Ability to occasionally climb using a ladder and drive or provide own transportation for bank deposits, management meetings, and visits to other Dollar General stores.

Nice To Haves

Bilingual Spanish speakers may be preferred at certain store locations.
High school diploma or equivalent.
One year of retail experience for external candidates.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities, including recruiting, hiring, and training qualified applicants.
Assist with merchandising, staging, stocking, storing, signing, and pricing merchandise according to established practices and management direction.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide leadership in delivering superior customer service.
Follow company procedures and policies and act as a role model for employees.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are deposited safely at the designated bank.
Support store financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements to identify business trends, expense control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Foster cooperation and collaboration, communicate tactfully with employees, and maintain an open forum for exchange.
Ensure store compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
