About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The role is intended to support the interactive development of an external candidate for the Store Manager position and is held for a limited period. The candidate may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence and acts as a role model by following company policies and procedures. The position requires supporting customer service, store operations, financial controls, merchandising, inventory, and staff development.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedures manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash handling, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including generating reports.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal skills.
Effective organization skills and attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations where limited standardization exists.
High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred.
Occasional driving or providing own transportation for bank deposits, management meetings, and visits to other Dollar General stores.
Ability to travel, including limited overnight stays.
Frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, and handling merchandise and equipment.
Frequent lifting of up to 40 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 55 pounds.
Occasional climbing using a ladder.

Nice To Haves

One year of experience in a retail environment is preferred for external candidates.
Bilingual Spanish speakers may be preferred at certain store locations.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities.
Assist with merchandising, including staging, stocking, storage, presentation, fixtures, signing, and pricing of merchandise.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide leadership in delivering superior customer service.
Follow company procedures and policies and serve as a role model for employees.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are deposited safely in the designated bank.
Assist in maintaining financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements to identify business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Support employee development and cooperate with the Store Support Center and store employees.
Recruit, hire, and train qualified applicants to meet store needs.
Ensure store compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
