About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The position is designed to develop an external candidate for a Store Manager role over a limited period. The candidate may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence and support recruiting, merchandising, inventory, customer service, financial controls, store safety, and compliance. The role involves occasional travel, including limited overnight stays.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash handling, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including generating reports.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal skills.
Effective organization skills and attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations with limited standardization.
Ability to frequently walk and stand, bend, stoop, and kneel.
Ability to frequently handle merchandise and equipment, including handheld scanners, pricing guns, box cutters, merchandise containers, carts, two-wheel dollies, and U-boats.
Ability to frequently lift up to 40 pounds and occasionally lift up to 55 pounds.
Ability to occasionally climb using a ladder.
Ability to occasionally drive or provide personal transportation for bank deposits, management meetings, and visits to other stores.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a moderate noise level and occasional exposure to outside weather conditions.
Ability to travel, with limited overnight stays.

Nice To Haves

High school diploma or equivalent is strongly preferred.
One year of experience in a retail environment is preferred for external candidates.
Bilingual Spanish speakers may be preferred at certain store locations.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities; recruit, hire, and train qualified applicants to meet store needs.
Assist with merchandising, including staging, stocking, storing, signing, and pricing merchandise according to established practices and Store Manager direction.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide customer service leadership and respond to customer needs.
Model compliance with company procedures and policies.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are safely deposited in the designated bank.
Support the store’s financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements to identify business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Support employee development and cooperation, and act as a liaison between the Store Support Center and store employees.
Ensure store compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
Occasionally travel to make bank deposits, attend management meetings, or visit other Dollar General stores.
