About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. This position is intended to provide interactive development for an external candidate for the Store Manager role and is held for a limited period. The role helps maintain store operations and customer service, supports employee development and compliance, and operates the store in the Store Manager’s absence. The position involves frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, and handling merchandise and equipment. It requires frequent lifting of up to 40 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 55 pounds, occasional ladder climbing, and occasional driving for bank deposits, management meetings, and visits to other Dollar General stores. Some travel with limited overnight stays is required. The work takes place in a fast-paced environment with moderate noise and occasional exposure to outdoor weather conditions.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash-handling procedures, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including report generation.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal and organizational skills, with attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations with limited standardization.

Nice To Haves

High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred.
One year of retail experience preferred for external candidates.
Bilingual Spanish speakers may be preferred at certain store locations.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities, including recruiting, hiring, and training qualified applicants.
Assist with merchandising, staging, stocking, storage, signing, and pricing merchandise according to established practices and Store Manager direction.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide customer service leadership and respond to customer needs.
Model compliance with company procedures and policies.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are safely deposited in the designated bank.
Help maintain financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements to identify business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Act as a liaison between the Store Support Center and store employees, and foster cooperation and collaboration.
Develop staff and ensure store compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
Occasionally drive to make bank deposits, attend management meetings, and visit other Dollar General stores.
